Juri Nikolajewitsch Stepanow ( Russian Юрий Николаевич Степанов , English transcription Yuriy Stepanov; born August 30, 1932 in Leningrad, today Saint Petersburg , † September 13, 1963 ) was a Soviet high jumper .

At the European Athletics Championships in 1954 in Bern, he was fifth. In 1957 he won the World Festival of Youth and Students and the World University Games. At the EM in 1958 in Stockholm he was sixth.

On July 13, 1957, he reached 2.16 m in the first attempt at the Helsinki- Leningrad city comparison and was thus world record holder (his previous personal best was 2.09 m). He achieved his world record with the so-called catapult shoe; on this the sole was wedge-shaped towards the rear, so that a more favorable take-off angle resulted (this shoe was soon banned). This record lasted until 1960.

In 1954 and 1958 he became Soviet champion.

After psychological problems, he hardly competed in 1959 and committed suicide in 1963 at the age of 31.
