The women's 400-meter run at the 1962 European Athletics Championships was held from September 12 to 14, 1962 in Belgrade's Partizan Stadium . For the second time this competition was part of the EM program. At the Olympic Games, however, the discipline did not appear on the competition calendar until 1964 .
The European champion was the defending champion Marija Itkina from the USSR, who equalized her own world record in the final . She won ahead of the British Joy Grieveson . Bronze went to Tilly van der Zwaard from the Netherlands .

Record improvement
In the final on September 14th, Marija Itkina improved her European Championship record to 53.4 seconds, thereby equalizing her own world record.
Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals. In the third race, two runners placed third together, so that four athletes from this run made it to the semi-finals.
