Helga Henning

Helga Henning , after marriage to Helga Fricke , (born November 11, 1937 in Laatzen ; † December 11, 2018 in Hamburg ) was a German athlete who was successful as a 400 meter runner in the 1960s .

It started for SV Hannover in 1896 (1962–63), Hamburger SV (1965–67) and SV Hamburg Police (1968).

Career

Helga Henning was German champion ten times :

She took part in the European Championships twice and reached the finals both times.

She won her only international medal at the European Indoor Games in Dortmund in 1966 , where she won the gold medal in front of the Czech Libuše Macounová (silver in 57.2 s) and the Irish Maeve Kyle (bronze in 57.3 s). Her victory time of 56.9 s she was able to repeat a year later at the European Indoor Games in 1967 in Prague , but was eliminated as third in her preliminary run.

Her last active year was also her most successful: At the XVI. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , she improved the German record three times:

  • 53.5 s in advance (third)
  • 53.3 s in between (first)
  • 52.8 s in the final (7th place)

Two years later it was pushed down to 52.7 by Christel Frese .

For her services to sport in Lower Saxony , she was included in the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History.
