Sergei Valentinovich Smirnov

Sergei Walentinowitsch Smirnow ( Russian Сергей Валентинович Смирнов , English transcription Sergey Smirnov ; born September 17, 1960 in Leningrad ; † September 18, 2003 ibid) was a Russian shot putter .

Starting for the Soviet Union , he won bronze at the Universiade in 1981 and 1983 , but retired from qualifying at the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki. In 1986 he won silver at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid. The following year bronze medals followed at the European Indoor Championships in Liévin and the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis . In 1988 he was eighth at the Olympic Games in Seoul , in 1990 fourth at the European Championships in Split .

At the World Indoor Championships in 1993 , starting for Russia, he finished seventh.

Sergei Smirnov was 1.98 m tall and weighed 126 kg during his playing days.
