Darapsa myron

Darapsa is a genus of butterflies from the family of the swarmers (Sphingidae). The genus is closely related to the genus Xylophanes .

features

The moths are medium in size. Their forewings have a slightly sickle-shaped tip, a convex outer edge and a sharp anal angle. The thin antennae are curved at their ends. Darapsa versicolor has a striking white forewing pattern that clearly stands out from the olive-green base color. The other two species of the genus, however, are rather dark in color.

The caterpillars of the three species look very similar. The first abdominal segment is greatly thickened. In contrast to what is usually the case with swarmers, the caterpillars cannot retract their first body segments and their head into the thickened segment. The anal horn is showy and fleshy. The dolls are also very similar. They are light beige to greyish, somewhat stocky and have a matt, slightly rough surface. The wing sheaths are strongly dotted with black. The eyes, stigmas, and intersegmental membranes on the abdomen are black.

Occurrence and way of life

The genus is widespread in the nearctic . The caterpillars feed on different types of plants from the families of the grapevine family (Vitaceae), heather family (Ericaceae), honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae), red family (Rubiaceae), hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae) and loosestrife (Lythraceae). Pupation takes place in a cocoon made of spun silk and plant parts u. Ä. On or just below the surface of the earth.

Systematics

Three species of the genus are known worldwide:
