The 400-meter hurdles for women in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 1 and 2 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held. For the women, this competition was on the program of a major international championship for the first time and was well attended with 28 participants.

Tatiana Selenzowa from the Soviet Union became European champion , who improved her own world record in the final and was the first athlete to stay under 55 seconds on this route. Second place went to Silvia Hollmann from the Federal Republic of Germany. Bronze went to the GDR runner Karin Roßley .

New championship record

After four first championship records by various runners in the preliminary and semi-finals, European champion Tatiana Selenzowa set the European Championship record with 54.89 seconds in the final on September 2nd, which was valid for four years after these European championships.
