The 100-meter hurdles for women in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 31 August and 1 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.
With gold and bronze, the hurdlers from the GDR won two medals in this competition. European champion was Johanna Klier , who had become an Olympic champion in 1976 as Johanna Schaller . She won before the 1976 Olympic runner-up Tatiana Anissimowa from the USSR. Bronze went to Gudrun Berend .

Record improvement
The world record holder Grażyna Rabsztyn , who did not finish in the final, improved the existing EM record in the semi-finals on August 31 by six hundredths of a second to 12.60 s.
