The 5000-meter race of the men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on August 31 and September 2, 1978 in the stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

European champion was the Italian Venanzio Ortis , four days earlier already second over 10,000 meters . He won ahead of the Swiss Markus Ryffel . Bronze went to the Soviet runner Aljaksandr Fjadotkin .
