The 100-meter race of the men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships on 29 and 30 August 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

European champion was the Italian Pietro Mennea , who had become vice European champion over 100 meters and European champion over 200 meters in 1974 . He won ahead of the GDR sprinter Eugen Ray . Bronze went to Volodymyr Ihnatenko from the Soviet Union.
