The 4 x 400 meters relay men in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 2 and 3 September 1978 Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

The Federal Republic of Germany became European champions with the line-up of Martin Weppler , Franz-Peter Hofmeister , Bernd Herrmann and Harald Schmid . Second place went to Poland with Jerzy Włodarczyk , Zbigniew Jaremski , Cezary Łapiński and Ryszard Podlas . Bronze went to Czechoslovakia (Josef Lomický, František Brečka, Miroslav Tulis, Karel Kolář ).

Record improvement

The European championship relay from the Federal Republic of Germany improved the existing EM record with the line-up of Martin Weppler , Franz-Peter Hofmeister , Bernd Herrmann and Harald Schmid in the final on September 3rd by 27 hundredths of a second to 3: 02.03 min.

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three relays per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two second fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
