Pierfrancesco Pavoni

Pierfrancesco Pavoni (born February 21, 1963 in Rome ) is a former Italian athlete who won the silver medal at world championships in 1983 with the 4 x 100 meter relay .

Athletic career

At his first international championships, the 1982 European Indoor Championships in Milan , Pavoni finished fourth in the 60-meter run in 6.68 s and missed the bronze medal by just two hundredths of a second. In the outdoor season 1982 Pavoni won the Italian championships in the 100-meter run . At the European Championships in Athens in 1982 , Pavoni won the silver medal behind Frank Emmelmann from the GDR in 10.25 seconds , and the Italian sprint relay took fourth place in 38.96 seconds. In 1983 Pavoni defended his Italian championship title. At the World Championships in Helsinki Pavoni was eliminated over 100 meters in the quarter-finals. In the relay race, for the first time in track and field history, all relays stayed under 39 seconds; the Italian relay with Stefano Tilli , Carlo Simionato , Pierfrancesco Pavoni and Pietro Mennea improved the Italian record in 38.37 s and won the silver medal before the Soviet relay, only the Americans were half a second ahead and set a new world record.

1984 Pavoni had a weaker season, at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles he was eliminated over 100 meters in the run; he was not used in the season. In 1985 Pavoni tried his hand at the 400-meter run and won the Italian championships on this route. The following year Pavoni competed at the European Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart in the 200-meter run, but was eliminated in the semifinals. With the relay, he finished fifth.

In 1987 Pavoni won his second Italian indoor championship over 60 meters after 1985. At the European Indoor Championships in 1987 in Liévin , he finished second in 6.58 s behind the Pole Marian Woronin . Two weeks later he won bronze behind two Americans at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis in 6.59 seconds. In the 1987 open-air season, Pavoni won the Italian Championships on both short sprint courses. At the highlight of the season, the World Championships in Rome , Pavoni reached the finals three times and took seventh place each time.

At the European Indoor Championships in Budapest in 1988 Pavoni again reached the final and finished fifth in 6.64 s. As in 1984, Pavoni qualified for the Olympic Games in the outdoor season . In Seoul he reached the quarter-finals over 100 meters, the Italian relay with Ezio Madonia , Sandro Floris , Pierfrancesco Pavoni and Stefano Tilli came into the final and finished fifth in 38.54 s. In 1989 Pavoni started as in 1987 at both the European Indoor Championships and the World Indoor Championships . In The Hague he finished fourth at the European Championships in 6.62 s, two weeks later he was the best European at the World Championships in Budapest and won bronze in 6.61 s behind the Cuban Andrés Simón and the Ghanaian John Myles-Mills . At the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 1990 Pavoni ran 6.59 s and won silver behind the Briton Linford Christie . At the European Championships in Split in 1990 , Pavoni was eliminated over 100 meters in the run, he was not used in the relay.
