The marker button is part of the road equipment and supports or replaces lane markings of all kinds. Marking button rows are therefore considered to be traffic signs according to the StVO. They are made of either metal or plastic and come in different shapes and colors. Depending on the location, reflective, non-reflective or illuminated marker buttons (for example with light-emitting diodes ) are used. A small solar cell built into the top is used to generate energy .

The application is carried out either by gluing (asphalt or concrete) or by hammering (paved surface) into the road surface. Problems arise at high speeds and when using a snowplow, since primarily the stuck-on marker buttons are quickly removed from the roadway.
