Sandro Floris (born June 12, 1965 in Cagliari ) is a former Italian athlete who specialized in the 200-meter run .

Career

The 1.78 m and 73 kg heavy sprinter from the GS Fiamma Azzure Roma had his first use at the Olympic Games in 1988 in Seoul . There he took fifth place with the Italian 4 x 100 meter relay in the final. In the following year he reached the fifth place over 200 m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in The Hague and fourth at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Budapest . He was also Italian champions over the same distance in 1989.

In 1990 Floris won the gold medal in the 200-meter run at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow with a time of 21.01 s. A good six months later he started outdoors at the European Athletics Championships in Split. The Italian 4 x 100 meter relay won there in the line-up of Mario Longo , Ezio Madonia , Sandro Floris and Stefano Tilli with a time of 38.39 s, the bronze medal behind the teams from France (37.79 s, the world record at the time ) and Great Britain (37.98 s). In the 200-meter run, Floris finished eighth in Split. In 1991 he reached fifth place with the relay at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and won the bronze medal over 200 m at the Mediterranean Games in Athens.

In 1994 Floris became the Italian champion in the 100-meter run . In the same year he won again the bronze medal with the relay at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki. The Italians reached the finish line with Ezio Madonia, Domenico Nettis , Giorgio Marras and Sandro Floris with a time of 38.99 s behind France (38.57 s) and the Ukraine (38.98 s).

Floris celebrated his most important success in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the 1995 World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. In the line-up of Giovanni Puggioni , Ezio Madonia, Angelo Cipolloni and Sandro Floris, the Italian team finished third behind the seasons of Canada (38.31 s) and Australia (38.50 s) with a time of 39.07 s. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, however, Floris was eliminated in the preliminary round with both the relay and the 200-meter run. His last international success was winning the gold medal with the relay at the 1997 Mediterranean Games in Bari. At the European Athletics Championships in Budapest in 1998, he only reached eighth place with the relay.
