Mike McFarlane

Mike McFarlane (actually: Michael Anthony McFarlane ; born May 2, 1960 in Hackney , London ) is a former British sprinter .

Life

McFarlane already competed for England in 1978 at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in the 100-meter run and was fifth in 10.29 s; in the 200-meter run he was eliminated in the semifinals. In 1979 he won three medals at the European Junior Championships: after bronze over 100 meters and gold over 200 meters, silver with the British team in the 4 x 100 meter relay .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , McFarlane was eliminated from the quarter-finals over 200 meters. He was the starting runner of the British relay, which reached fourth place in the Moscow final in 38.62 s, nine hundredths of a second behind the bronze medal for France.

In 1982 McFarlane became the British 200 meter champion. At the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane he reached over 100 meters and with the English relay the fifth place. In the 200-meter run, he crossed the finish line at the same time as the Scot Allan Wells in 20.43 s, and both received a gold medal. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , McFarlane was fifth in the 100 meter final in 10.27 s and seventh in the British relay, in which Allan Wells and Daley Thompson were two Olympic champions.

At the European Indoor Championships in 1985 in Piraeus , McFarlane won the 60-meter run in 6.51 seconds . The following year he won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh over 100 meters in 10.35 s behind the Canadian Ben Johnson and behind Linford Christie . The English relay ran without Christie in the line-up of Lincoln Asquith , Thompson, McFarlane and Clarence Callender in 39.19 s to silver, four hundredths of a second behind the Canadian team. Four weeks later at the European Championships in Stuttgart , McFarlane was sixth over 100 meters in 10.29 s. The British relay with the cast of Elliot Bunney , Thompson, McFarlane and Christie won bronze in 38.71 s.

At the 1987 World Championships in Rome , McFarlane was eliminated over 100 meters in the semi-finals. The British relay was disqualified in the run-up. At the end of his career, he won an Olympic medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 with the British relay, which ran in the line-up of Bunney, John Regis , McFarlane and Christien 38.28 s to second place behind the team from the Soviet Union.

Mike McFarlane is 1.78 m tall and weighed 76 kg during his playing days.
