Mariano Agate (born May 19, 1939 in Mazara del Vallo , Sicily , Italy ; † April 3, 2013 ibid) was a Sicilian mafioso.

Life

Mariano Agate was the boss of the mafia family from Mazara del Vallo and a representative of the rural Cosa Nostra , which has dominated the Cosa Nostra since the Second Mafia War . He supported the Corleonesi when they defeated the traditional Mafia families in a bloody war in which nearly 1,000 people were killed. He himself ordered the murder of investigating magistrate Giacomo Montalto in 1982. When the mayor of Castelvetrano , Vito Lipari, was murdered , he was himself a member of the four-man killer squad, which also included Catania's boss , Nitto Santapaola . Agate became an important pillar of the "boss of the bosses", Salvatore Riina , who gave him power over the mandamento of Mazara del Vallo; a mandamento includes three families. Through his close association with the Corleonese, he also became a permanent member of the commission .

Agate was arrested in 1982 for heroin trafficking . Convicted of multiple murders, he served life imprisonment. In 1991 he fled when he was given clearance for good conduct. In 1992 he could be arrested again. Now he was also charged with the murders of the well-known investigating judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino , as Agate was part of the commission that decided these murders. He served his sentence in a maximum security prison. He is said to have still had some control over the Mazara del Vallo family through his son. He was also said to have good contacts with the Calabrian mafia 'Ndrangheta , with whom he operated in the cocaine trade .

Agate died on April 3, 2013 at his home in Mazara del Vallo. About ten days before his death, he was released from prison under house arrest because of his serious illness.
