John Dickie (novelist)
John Dickie (* 1963 in Dundee ) is a British journalist , historian and Romance philologist who works as a professor at University College London . Above all, his works on the history and culture of Italy are known .
Life
Dickie was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1963 and grew up in Leicestershire . After completion of the Loughborough Grammar School , he received a place at Pembroke College of Oxford University , where he remained until 1986 successfully Modern Languages studied. He then obtained his Master of Arts and finally DPhil at Sussex University . Dickie has been teaching at University College in London since 1993, where he has since been appointed Professor of Italian Studies. His main research interests are southern Italy , Italian national identities and social theories, the cultural history of liberal Italy, organized crime ( Mafia ) and Italian cuisine .
In addition to his university work, John Dickie is also a journalist and author in Italy and the UK. In 1999 his first book Darkest Italy was published. The Nation and Stereotypes of the Mezzogiorno . His second work, Cosa Nostra. A History of the Sicilian Mafia, about the history of the Mafia, won the 2004 Dagger Award for best non-fiction book in crime fiction . Delizia! The Epic History of the Italians and their Food , a work on Italian cuisine, received a recommendation from the André Simon Food and Drink Book Awards in 2007 .
In 2005 he was appointed Commendatore des Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana by the President of the Italian Republic for his services .
John Dickie is married to the author Sarah Penny. The couple have two children and live in London.
