Commendatore (German Komtur ) is a class in various Italian orders . Commendatore is in the middle of the hierarchy of the religious classes, mostly above Cavaliere and Ufficiale and below Grande Ufficiale and Cavaliere di Gran Croce.

Commendatore was a class of the Military Order of Savoy (Ordine Militare di Savoia) founded in 1815 , the Order of the Crown of Italy (Ordine della Corona d'Italia) founded in 1868, and the Colonial Order of the Star of Italy (Ordine coloniale della Stella d'Italia ).

Following World War II and the proclamation of the Republic, Commendatore is now a class of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al merito della Repubblica Italiana), the Military Order of Italy (Ordine militare d'Italia) and the Order of the Star of Italy (Ordine della Stella d'Italia) (formerly Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana ).

The famous literary figure of a commendatore is the father of Donna Anna in the opera Don Giovanni by Mozart . This character also plays a central role in Haruki Murakami's contemporary Japanese novel , The Assassination of Commendatore .

Commendatore is often awarded to people who have made special contributions to the Italian economy. A famous example of this is Commendatore Enzo Ferrari . In this context, it can be compared with state titles in other countries, for example with the honorary title of Kommerzialrat in Austria.
