Ján Volko (born November 2, 1996 in Bratislava ) is a Slovak sprinter .

Athletic career

Ján Volko gained his first experience at international championships in 2015 at the European Indoor Championships in Prague , where he was eliminated in the first round of the 60-meter run with 6.86 seconds. In mid-June he won the silver medal in athletics at the first European Games in Baku , which also represented the third division of the European Team Championship, where he himself won the 200-meter run in 21.08 seconds and won the Slovak 4- x 100 meter relay came in third. Then he got at the Junior European Championships in Eskilstuna in the 100-meter run to the semifinals, in which he was eliminated with 10.84 s, before he was eliminated over 200 meters with 21.68 s in the first round. In 2016 he took part over 60 meters in the World Indoor Championships in Portland , but also retired there with 6.80 seconds in the lead. At the European Championships in Amsterdam he reached the semifinals over 100 and 200 meters, in which he was eliminated with 10.43 s and 21.28 s, respectively. In the following year he won the silver medal over 60 meters behind the British Richard Kilty at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade with a new national record of 6.58 seconds . At the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz he set a new championship as well as Slovak record over 200 meters with 20.33 s and thus won the gold medal and had to go over 100 meters in 10.18 s with the silver medal behind the British Ojie Edoburun content. He qualified over both distances for the World Championships in London , where he was eliminated over 100 meters with 10.25 s in the first round , while he reached the semifinals over 200 meters and was eliminated there with 20.61 s. Only two weeks later he won the bronze medal over 200 meters at the Summer Universiade in Taipei in 20.99 seconds behind the French Jeffrey John and James Linde from Canada. In addition, he was fifth over 100 meters in 10.30 s and retired in the 4 x 100 meter relay with 40.69 s in the lead.

In 2018 he finished sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 6.59 s and at the European Championships in Berlin he reached the semi-finals over 100 and 200 meters, in which he was eliminated with 10.31 s and 20.58 s respectively. The following year he surprisingly won the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in the 60-meter run in 6.60 seconds and then won the silver medal over 100 meters behind Portuguese Carlos Nascimento in 10.38 seconds at the European Games in Minsk . In July he took part again in the Student World Games in Naples , finished fourth over 100 meters in 10.36 s and placed fifth over 200 meters in 20.66 s.

From 2015 to 2019, Volko was the Slovakian champion in the 100-meter run and in 2015 and 2016, as well as in 2018 and 2019, also over 200 meters. In the hall he secured the championship title over 60 meters from 2017 to 2019 and the title over 200 meters in 2015 and 2016. In addition, he became indoor champion in the 4 x 200 meter relay in 2015.
