Jeffrey John
Jeffrey Philip Hywel John (born February 10, 1953 in Tonyrefail) is an Anglican clergyman and theologian and the current dean of St Albans Abbey .
John was born in Tonyrefail in southern Wales on February 10, 1953. After completing school, John studied Classics and Modern Languages at Hertford College, Oxford . He then studied theology at St Stephen's House in Oxford. After a curracy in Penarth, Llandaf, John returned to Oxford and earned a doctorate in theology. John joined the Society of Catholic Priests . John became a chaplain at Brasenose College, Oxford, and was appointed dean of Magdalen College , Oxford in 1984. He was vicar at Holy Trinity Church in Eltham since 1991 and became canon chancellor at Southwark Cathedral in London in 1997 .
Dr. John is a founding member of Affirming Catholicism , a group that defends Catholicism within the Anglican Church and supports a campaign for women's ordination .
On May 20, 2003, his appointment as Bishop of Reading, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Oxford, was announced. John's nomination sparked controversy in the Church of England and the Anglican community . For many years John has been involved as an LGBT activist.
On July 6, 2003, John withdrew his episcopal nomination . On April 19, 2004, John was appointed Dean of St Albans Abbey. The introduction took place on July 2, 2004.
In August 2006, John married his partner Grant Holmes.
