Gary Oakes

Gary James Oakes (born September 21, 1958 in London ) is a former British hurdler .

Oakes finished third in the 400 meter hurdles at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 1977 in Donetsk . Over the same distance he was British national champion in 1980 and 1982 and in 1981 champion of the Amateur Athletics Association .

Oakes celebrated his most important international success at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In the 400 meter hurdles he won the bronze medal behind Volker Beck from the GDR and Wassyl Archypenko from the Soviet Union. Oakes later started at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , but could not qualify for the final.

Gary Oakes is 1.77 m tall, had a competition weight of 69 kg and started for the Haringey Athletic Club . His wife Heather Hunte won two Olympic bronze medals in the British 4 x 100 meter relay .
