Achillbeg ( Irish : Acaill Bheag ) is a small island in County Mayo in Connacht Province in Ireland. It is 150 meters off the southern tip of Achill Island and 230 meters southeast of the Irish mainland ( Curraun Peninsula ), and 3.5 km north of Clare Island . The name means 'little Achilles'.
The island is 2.3 km long and up to 1.2 km wide, with an area of around one square kilometer. It consists of two hills that are connected by an isthmus .
In 1965 the permanent settlement, which was located in the middle of Acaill Bheag between two hills to the north and south, was abandoned and the residents moved to the mainland and to Achill Island. Today there are a number of holiday homes on the island.
In the south of the island there has been a nine-meter-high lighthouse since 1965, which together with the Carrickfadda lighthouse on Clare Island marks the entrance to Clew Bay .
