Rainer Pottel becomes DDR decathlon champion in 1981

Rainer Pottel (born August 29, 1953 in Berlin ) is a former athlete from the German Democratic Republic who won the GDR championship title in the decathlon three times .

Pottel took third place in the all-around competition at the GDR indoor championships in 1974. He won the title outdoors in 1974. In 1976 he finished second behind Siegfried Stark outdoors . In 1977 Pottel took second place indoors and third place outdoors. In 1978 Pottel won the GDR championships for the second time. At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 , Pottel took eighth place. Two years later, Pottel took part again at the season highlight, but gave up at the Olympic Games in Moscow after three invalid attempts in the long jump. In 1981 Pottel won the GDR championships indoors and outdoors. In a competition in Birmingham he set his personal best with 8311 points (8338 according to the current rating of 1985) and was thus best in the world in 1981.

From 1974 to 1981, Pottel took part in 17 competitions wearing the national jersey. He started for TSC Berlin . With a height of 1.85 m, his competition weight was 81 kg. As part of state doping in the GDR , Pottel also took doping agents .

Pottel, whose special discipline was the pole vault as part of the decathlon, worked after his career as a trainer in the jump area and in all-around. His protégés included the high jump world champion Martin Buß and the decathlete and indoor all-around world champion André Niklaus . In 2010 he became the national decathlon coach.
