The thorn bush nightjar ( Caprimulgus donaldsoni ) is a species of bird in the nightjar family (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs in the north-west and south of Somalia , in the east and south of Ethiopia , in the east of Kenya , in the north-east of Tanzania and possibly also in the south-east of South Sudan .

Their distribution area includes dry or semi-arid bushy ( acacia ) open areas, including wooded river valleys, up to 1250 m.

description

The thorn bush nightjar is the smallest African nightjar at 18–19 cm. The male weighs between 21 and 36 g and the female between 26 and 36 g. There are only minor differences in appearance between the sexes. The nightjar has a strong gray-brown and red-brown pattern. The parting is light gray, the broad neck band is reddish brown. There is often a wide white spot on the throat. In flight you can see white spots on the four wings of the hand and small white spots on the two outer control feathers in both sexes.

The male's call is described as a monotonous whistling “tu-wee, tiu”.

Way of life

The diet consists of ants , grasshoppers , moths , beetles and caterpillars .

The breeding season is between May and June in Somalia, March in Ethiopia, possibly between August and October in Kenya. The eggs are laid directly on the ground without a nest.

Hazardous situation

The thorn bush nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
