Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis (born April 29, 1957 in London ) is a British - Irish theater and film actor. He is the only male actor to have won the Oscar for Best Actor three times.
Life
Daniel Day-Lewis was born to British actress Jill Balcon and the Irish-British writer Cecil Day-Lewis . His maternal grandfather, Michael Balcon , was a major figure in the UK film industry as head of Ealing Studios , and his older sister Lydia Tamasin is a documentary filmmaker.
Day-Lewis studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School . His first role was in the 1971 film Sunday, Bloody Sunday . After this first experience in the film business, Day-Lewis returned to the theater. It was not until 1982 that he could be seen again in a cinema production. He had a small role in the film adaptation of the life of Mahatma Gandhi under the title Gandhi, with Ben Kingsley in the lead role. In 1985 he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and the role of Flute in Midsummer Night's Dream .
In the same year he was again noticed in the film industry when he played the role of a gay punk in the film adaptation of Hanif Kureishi's play Mein wunderbaren Waschsalon . That year he took on the role of naval officer John Fryer on the side of Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins in The Bounty .
In the years to come he took part in other important films (including Zimmer mit Aussicht and The Unbearable Lightness of Being at Juliette Binoche's side ), until his role in Mein Linker Fuß (1989) received great attention worldwide. His portrayal of spastic paralyzed writer and painter Christy Brown , who wrote with his left foot and painted, was honored with many awards, including the Oscar for best actor.
In 1989 he returned to the stage and played Hamlet in a production by Richard Eyre at the National Theater in London . Judi Dench played the role of Hamlet's mother. On September 5th, after three weeks of play, he had a breakdown on stage when Hamlet met his father's ghost. He burst into tears, had to leave the stage and was replaced by Jeremy Northam and later by Ian Charleson . That was Day-Lewis' last appearance on stage. The subsequent media hype may have been a reason for his temporary retirement from public life and relocation to Ireland.
However, that did not mean the end of his acting career. He was increasingly given roles in major cinema productions. For example, he was seen in the films The Last of the Mohicans and Martin Scorsese's Time of Innocence . His role in the film In the Name of the Father (1993) brought him various awards, including a Golden Globe - and an Oscar nomination. At the end of the 1990s, the actor retired from the film business for five years to devote himself to the shoemaking trade in Florence .
In 2002, Day-Lewis turned again under the direction of Martin Scorsese alongside Leonardo DiCaprio , who co-produced the film and explicitly wanted Day-Lewis for the role, Gangs of New York , which again earned him several nominations (Golden Globe, Oscar) as well various awards (including in the category "Best Villain" at the MTV Movie Awards). The actor refused the big blockbuster productions. For example, he turned down the offer to play the role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings . Such a thoroughly fictional role is not compatible with his method acting .
In 2008, he won his second Oscar for Best Actor for his role in There Will Be Blood . Contrary to his previous roles, Daniel Day-Lewis played in the musical film Nine in 2010 , which even earned him a Golden Globe nomination in the category Best Actor - Comedy or Musical . In 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . On February 24, 2013, he received his third Oscar in the category Best Male Leading Role for his portrayal of US President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln . On the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's birthday party in 2014, Prince William knighted Daniel Day-Lewis , which has led him to use the title "Sir" ever since.
On June 20, 2017, Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he would no longer work as an actor. For his last film role in the drama The Silk Thread (2017), he was nominated for the sixth time for the Oscar for best actor.
Day-Lewis has been married to Rebecca Miller since 1996 , the daughter of Arthur Miller and the photographer Inge Morath , with whom he lives in the country in Ireland ( Annamoe , County Wicklow ). The couple have two children. He has a son from a previous relationship with actress Isabelle Adjani .
