Richard Eyre

Sir Richard Charles Hastings Eyre , CH , CBE (born March 28, 1943 in Barnstaple , Devon , England) is a British theater and film director and writer. Today Eyre is one of the most important theater directors in Great Britain, who has received numerous awards for his over 100 productions. In addition to his stage work, he also made television films for the BBC and some feature films.

life and work

Eyre was born in Barnstaple, a town in south-west England. After studying at Cambridge, he initially worked as an assistant theater director before he was offered his first stage direction in Leicester in 1965 . This was followed by an appointment as director of the Royal Lyceum Theater in Edinburgh . From 1973 to 1978 he was Artistic Director at the Nottingham Playhouse and also worked as a producer and film director for the BBC .

From 1988 to 1997 he was Artistic Director of the National Theater, later the Royal National Theater , in London. Under his leadership, the venue experienced a heyday, which has been awarded countless awards. During this time Eyre himself staged 27 plays and published several theater books, such as “Utopia and Other Places” (1993), “Changing Stages” (2000) and “National Service” (2003). In 1992 he was a Commander in the Order of the British Empire was added and in 1997 as a Knight Bachelor for beaten knight . In the course of the New Year Honors 2017, Eyre was honored by the British Queen as Companion of Honor .

Richard Eyre is married to the television producer Sue Birtwistle .
