action

Peter is a software designer and owns a successful company. His wife Lisa is a shoe designer. From Peter's point of view, they have a happy marriage. Lisa is often in Italy for work. However, she only reports briefly about the trips.

Lisa dies of cancer. Peter finds a message from an unknown caller in her mailbox and becomes suspicious. He discovers a password-protected folder in her laptop, the password of which he cannot find out at first, but after Lisa's death he received a slip of paper from her, which after a while turns out to be revealing the password he was looking for. The folder contains photos of Lisa and another man as lovers. Peter is beside himself with anger and sadness. He argues with his daughter Abigail.

Peter finds out the identity of the other man named Ralph and where he lives in Italy and travels there with murder intentions. He made his acquaintance and played chess with him in a bistro. He finds out that although Ralph has an address in a splendid house, he is only the caretaker there. His lust for murder evaporates.

Peter uses Lisa's email account to invite Ralph to a meal in a hotel on Lake Como - at the very place where Lisa and Ralph lived together and where the photos were taken. Ralph assumes this invitation is from Lisa. He tells Peter about it and complains that he has no money to go there and afterwards to have a party with Lisa in London. Peter willingly gives him money. When Ralph arrives at the hotel on Lake Como as agreed, Lisa is not sitting at the table as expected, but Peter, who now explains to him that Lisa was his wife and that she has died. reception

The lexicon of international films judges that the film is a “chamber play-like jealousy drama based on a short story by Bernhard Schlink, which is lost in redundancies and unbelievable emotional statements. Despite interesting approaches, the triangular relationship described remains without tension. "

Ulf Lepelmeier from Filmstarts is of the opinion that the film is “a crude mixture of psychological thriller and drama [...] that hardly gives its well-known cast room to develop”. It is about an “unhappily constructed thriller”, the story of which is “threadbare dramatized” so that it was “robbed of its emotional depth”. “With the constantly aggressive atmosphere, the withdrawn end no longer seems conclusive, the characters have to change their attitude towards each other too abruptly. The dark illustrations and the dramatic background music work towards an arc of tension that does not result from Schlink's original. "Lepelmeier's conclusion is:" Due to the unnecessarily nested narrative structure and the withholding of key information, he inflates an originally intimate, withdrawn story about trust and jealousy and forgiveness to a reasonably suspenseful thriller drama, which is hardly carried away and its final twist, which is actually not one, buys too dearly.
