action
Omar is the only son of the Pakistani journalist Hussein Ali, who was highly regarded in his home country. The run-down emigrant lives in the south of London in a neglected apartment where he mainly indulges in alcohol. Omar, whose mother died by suicide , takes care of him.
Omar's uncle Nasser, a wealthy businessman ("There's money in the dirt") in Margaret Thatcher- ruled England and in many ways the exact opposite of his brother Ali, shows his nephew a rundown, poorly-running laundromat that Omar is reopening To bring it in front. He also sees him as the future husband of his fun-loving daughter Tania. Omar known from school, unemployed and living in squats, who has split up with his gang, is persuaded by Omar to join the business. Since he has fallen in love with Omar, he accepts. So you become lovers and business partners and transform the laundromat with a lot of work, color and imagination into a piece of jewelry that is about to open. Omar's father is unimpressed; he would prefer Omar to resume his studies. He also wants to talk him out of dealing with Johnny, whom Ali knows from earlier as a violent racist. Meanwhile, Omar and Johnny plan to take over two more salons.
Nasser has a relationship with Rachel, an Englishwoman, who receives financial support from Nasser's relatives. She cannot bear her situation and ends the liaison. Nasser, depressed, moves in with his brother Hussein Ali, with whom he is reconciled. Nasser's daughter Tania is engaged to Omar, but falls in love with the homosexual Johnny. When she realizes that her love will not be returned, she moves to another district.
The racist and violent gang that Johnny used to belong to attacks the laundromat on the day it opens. Johnny, who is brutally beaten by the gang members because they see him as a traitor to their worldview, is saved by Omar. The movie ends with Johnny and Omar splashing water for fun in the bathroom.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 11, 1986 that the film does not focus on the plot, but rather gives a feeling for social conditions. Such a film lives from the representations made by the "fascinating group of unknown actors". The only known to the critic are Shirley Anne Field and Daniel Day-Lewis, whose portrayals he described as a "miracle of acting". Ebert wrote that the film reminded him of the movie Rooms with a View , not just because of Daniel Day-Lewis's involvement, but because the main characters had a choice.
