The Program - At Any Price (working title Icon ) is a 2015 British-French biographical drama about Lance Armstrong directed by Stephen Frears and starring Ben Foster as Armstrong and Chris O'Dowd as David Walsh . The film is based on Walsh's book "Seven Deadly Sins".

From 1993 Lance Armstrong took part in professional cycling, but ended up only in the middle field, especially in mountain stages. He is looking for Dr. Michele Ferrari started to dope with erythropoietin (EPO). He refuses treatment because Armstrong is too heavy. Armstrong then begins injecting EPO on his own. Regardless of the doping, he gets cancer and undergoes brain operations and chemotherapy. He must report to the attending physician about the intake of EPO, testosterone and cortisone, among others.

After the cancer was successfully treated, Lance Armstrong wants to race again and take part in the Tour de France. This time, Dr. Ferrari to the doping treatment and provides both Armstrong and his team for an artificial increase in erythrocytes.

At first Armstrong was only considered an outsider at the 1999 Tour de France , but then surprisingly won several stages and the tour. The journalist David Walsh , who knows Armstrong personally, becomes suspicious and does research in his environment. However, he does not find any witnesses or evidence of doping abuse. At the same time, Armstrong is building a clean image and using the ASO and the Livestrong Foundation he founded to cover up growing problems with doping and doping tests. Meanwhile, his team takes on Floyd Landis , who also takes doping substances as a result. However, he begins to criticize this and Armstrong's behavior.

Eventually, David Walsh finds witnesses who testify that Armstrong was using doping substances. The story will be published in 2004, but with insufficient evidence. Since Armstrong has never tested positive for doping and has sworn to state that he never used doping substances, the newspaper Walsh works for ends up having to pay damages. Armstrong retired from cycling in 2005. Floyd Landis won the Tour de France in 2006, but was subsequently disqualified after a positive doping test.

In 2009 Armstrong returned to cycling and started taking doping drugs again. Landis asks if he can join his team, which Armstrong refuses because of Landi's drug test. Armstrong, to his disappointment, only finished third in the Tour de France .

Floyd Landis decides to testify regarding his doping past. As a result of the statement, the ASO can no longer protect Armstrong. Lance Armstrong is subsequently deprived of numerous victories in cycling. Sponsors also terminate the contracts with him. Finally, Armstrong appears on " Oprah's Next Chapter " and confesses to years of abuse of performance-enhancing substances.

The film premiered on September 14, 2015 at the Toronto International Film Festival . It opened in theaters in France on September 16 and in Great Britain on October 14 .

The film grossed $ 1,732,202 worldwide, excluding the United States .

criticism

The Program - At Any Price received mostly positive reviews. In the Internet Movie Database it was awarded an average of 6.5 stars out of 10. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 65%.

The film service judges that the "perfectly crafted feature film" tells a "real crime thriller" in an "exciting and entertaining way, with the fascinating main actor sounding out the psyche of the protagonist and the production targeting the fraudulent sell-out of the sporting ideals"
