Lady Vegas is a 2012 American film directed by Stephen Frears and starring Bruce Willis , Rebecca Hall , Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn . The film is based on a true story captured by Beth Raymer in the book Lay the Favorite: A Memoir of Gambling .

action

The pretty Beth tries her luck in Las Vegas and wants to work as a waitress there. However, she meets Holly, who gets her a job at the bookmaker Dink. She places bets for him at the betting offices of the casinos and places bets for him over the phone at betting offices in the Caribbean.

Beth begins to fall in love with Dink. However, Dink's wife Tulip notices this, whereupon Dink Beth quits. Beth meets Jeremy at the casino, they spend the night together and Beth decides to go to New York with Jeremy.

The betting business at Dink is very bad. When Beth is about to clear her motel room, Dink shows up and can persuade her to work for him again. However, business at Dink is still bad. As Dink becomes increasingly choleric, Beth quits and goes to New York to see Jeremy. Instead of looking for a legal job, she starts working for the bookmaker Rosie in New York. It collects the stakes for him and distributes the winnings to the players. In addition, she establishes the contact between Rosie and the player Dave. Unlike Las Vegas, however, such betting shops are illegal in New York. Dink warns Beth about Rosie's illegal business.

Rosie opens her own betting shop on the Caribbean island of Curaçao , as gambling is legal there. Beth goes there with Rosie to run the betting shop. Jeremy stays in New York and does the betting settlement for Beth. However, the betting shop in Curacao is not running as Beth imagined. Beth therefore decides to go back to New York. When Dave doesn't want to pay his gambling debts, the illegal betting business in New York threatens to be exposed. Dink and Tulip decide to fly to New York and help Beth and Jeremy there. After some searching they can find Dave and Beth pressures him to collect the money. To pay off his debt, Dave places one final bet. Beth accepts the deal. Dave can eventually win his bet.

criticism

“In this game of being and appearing, the film unfortunately never finds the right balance… In Lady Vegas, [Stephan Frears] throws everything together and yet cannot combine it coherently. How betting works, how Beth influences the odds and thus makes more money - the viewer never finds out and so cannot share Beth's joy in betting either. "
