action

In London in the postwar 1950s. Well-known tailor Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril run The House of Woodcock together . Reynolds is the overly sensitive creative, Cyril organizes the business and holds all the strings in hand. The House of Woodcock makes robes for members of high society and the royal family. Customers include wealthy heiresses, movie stars and other celebrities. The women come and go through Reynolds' life, one or the other living in his household. They inspire the die-hard bachelor, encourage his creativity until he is bored. If he has enough of them, his sister Cyril makes sure that they leave his house.

While visiting a restaurant he meets the young waitress Alma, whom he invites to dinner. After dinner in a gourmet restaurant by the sea, they drive back to London in his sports car. He invites her to his home, asks her to put on his latest creation, an evening dress, and then asks her to be allowed to “measure” it, whereby the act of “measuring” increasingly takes on an erotic-intimate flair . She soon moves into his house, becomes a muse, an employee in his studio. After the great success of his new collection, he grabs Alma by the hand full of euphoria and storms into the bedroom with her. Alma becomes his mistress.

However, Alma soon encounters all of the rules, ironclad habits, and hypersensitivity that rule Reynolds' daily life. As stubbornly as he clings to his rules, she just as stubbornly shakes these very rules without, however, that is the aim of her actions, really getting to him. She remains outside of his life. His controlled and well-planned life is gradually falling apart. The fight between the two culminates when, despite Cyril's serious warning not to do this, she “surprises” him with a home-cooked dinner. This surprise completely upsets him. In the following argument, he suggests separation. She leaves the room furious.

However, Alma stays in the house and appears to submit. Reynolds is commissioned to tailor the wedding dress for a Belgian princess, and the whole atelier gets excited. Reynolds receives the princess, for whom he has already sewn the christening gown, with the greatest courtesy. Alma watches them both, and she becomes jealous. During a walk in the forest, she collects mushrooms and poisons his breakfast tea with dried mushrooms. Reynolds goes into the studio to put the finishing touches on the princess' dress, which is presented on a mannequin. He gets dizzy, stumbles and falls to the floor with the wedding dress. The dress is ruined and Reynolds is unable to move. In a night shift, however, the employees manage to tailor the dress. Reynolds becomes seriously ill, has a fever, but refuses to admit a doctor, he only allows Alma to be around. She takes care of him with devotion, he is slowly getting well again and can work again. He proposes marriage to Alma, which she accepts. They both get married and seem very happy together. But that does not end the power struggle between the two.

At a party, Reynolds flirts with one of his longtime friends, while Alma is courted by her son, who tries to persuade her to a New Year's Eve ball. Alma and Reynolds watch each other with suspicion and growing jealousy. Alma insists on going to the ball with him, but he refuses and works. An explosive tension has built up in the house, the two women fighting over Reynolds, but treating each other with controlled courtesy. Reynolds is so carried away that he confesses to his sister that Alma is driving him crazy, that he is turning everything upside down and that he should be removed from the house. His sister shows little understanding for his love problems. Alma overhears the conversation, remains calm on the outside, and goes back to picking mushrooms. Alma braises the poisonous mushrooms with lots of butter, just as Reynolds doesn't like it. Reynolds eats it even though he knows he is ingesting poison. He and Alma wait in the bathroom for the mushrooms to work, and they declare their love for one another.

production

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson , who also wrote the screenplay for the film and ultimately also acted as cameraman for the film.

Daniel Day-Lewis played the role of tailor and fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock in the film. Initially the character was called Charles James. Lesley Manville took on the role of his sister Cyril. The Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps plays in the film Alma. The German synchronization was for a dialogue book by Alexander lion and the dialogue director of Clemens Frohman on behalf of Interopa Film GmbH, Berlin. Benjamin Völz lends his voice to Reynold Woodcock in the German version, and Vicky Krieps himself speaks Alma.

Filming began at the end of January 2017 in Lythe, North Yorkshire , and continued in the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay . Another North Yorkshire location was Whitby. In addition, the film was shot in the fishing village of Staithes, in the ballroom of Blackpool Tower , in London and in Switzerland . The set was created by Mark Tildesley and Véronique Melery .

The silk thread is the fourth feature film, alongside the documentary Junun (2015), in which Paul Thomas Anderson collaborated with Jonny Greenwood , a member of the Radiohead group. Robert Ames directed the London Contemporary Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic . Greenwood also used a string quartet and a cimbalon , which is used to characterize Alma, which is supposed to allude to a presumed origin from an Eastern European country. In addition to his original compositions, Greenwood uses passages and quotations from Berlioz , Brahms , Schubert , Fauré and Debussy . The score was created in close cooperation between the director and composer, who was involved in the work from the early stages of the film. The soundtrack includes 18 pieces of music and was released on January 12, 2018 as a download and on Nonesuch Records as a CD.

After a first trailer in October 2017, a first trailer in German was published in early November 2017. The film was first shown on November 24, 2017 at the Ayra Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills. The film was released in selected US cinemas on December 25, 2017 and in German cinemas on February 1, 2018.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The very calmly staged film tells a serious and conflict-laden love story. However, it does not contain any scenes or dialogues that could frighten or burden children from the age of 6. The atmosphere is rather cool, there are no emotional outbursts or vulgar language. Very occasionally there are slightly dramatic situations, e.g. B. when the young woman deliberately and heavily poisoned her lover with inedible mushrooms. But these are staged so discreetly that the content is hardly accessible to children of primary school age. "

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has a score of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (as of January 3, 2018) and was ranked fourth among the most anticipated films of 2017 in the IndieWire Critics Poll 2016.

Patrick Seyboth from epd Film calls the film an intoxicatingly beautiful work about love and power, style and stubbornness: “A touch of Hitchcock already blows through the silk thread . It starts with the names and doesn't stop with the ambiguity of the food scenes. " Paul Thomas Anderson himself named Rebecca as a role model, according to Seyboth, and indeed both the sophisticated, morbid and somehow enchanted atmosphere of the 'House of Woodcock' were reminiscent 'as well as the film music by Jonny Greenwood , who moves dreamlike between indulgent romance and suspenseful suggestion, of Hitchcock's Gothic Romance, as well as Woodcock's fixation on a deceased and the omnipresence of his sister Cyril, who dominates the fashion company and the household like the gloomy Mrs. Danvers in Manderley. As there, Alma is fighting not only to be a marginal figure in the rigid world of her lover, but to have a lively relationship with him, according to Seyboth.

The film has worldwide revenues of $ 43.5 million. In Germany, the film has so far recorded 171,432 visitors (as of March 25, 2018).
