Robert Ames (born October 8, 1985 in Kettering , Northamptonshire ) is an English orchestra conductor, viola player and music producer. In 2008 he founded the London Contemporary Orchestra with Hugh Brunt . Ames and Brunt are co-conductors and joint artistic directors of the orchestra.

Life

Robert Ames, who took weekend courses at the Royal Academy of Music while still at school , studied viola with Martin Outram. Ames and Hugh Brunt have known each other since they were young and stayed in touch during their studies. In 2008 they founded the London Contemporary Orchestra together , which quickly developed into one of the leading London symphony orchestras with a focus on contemporary music, cross-over and experimental music. In 2015, the orchestra received the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award in the Ensemble category. Robert Ames is a founding member of the Gagliano Ensemble , which regularly performs in the UK and abroad.

Ames has worked with numerous composers. They include u. a. Peter Maxwell Davies , Pierre Boulez , George Benjamin , Harrison Birtwistle , Jonathan Cole and Mark-Anthony Turnage . Since 2010 he has been involved as a viola soloist and the LCO under his direction on the music for several feature films.
