action

Jack Slavin and his daughter Rose live on an island. Rose doesn't go to school; she is tutored by her father. But this one is sick and will soon die.

Jack meets Kathleen, who has two sons. She begins a relationship with him and moves in with him, which initially upsets Rose. The teenager cuts his hair short and shoots at furniture in Jack's and his girlfriend's room. She later sleeps with Kathleen's son Thaddius and befriends her second son Rodney.

An argument ensues in which Rose injures Thaddius, whereupon Kathleen and her sons leave the island. After her father's imminent death, Rose leaves the island and moves to a commune.

Reviews

Desson Thomson wrote in the Washington Post on April 1, 2005, that in the film "grandiose representations" would fight against a "poor script" and lose. The script is actually provocative and original; the characters are "deeply interesting" . The structure, however, appears to be random, the issues addressed - schematic. It could still be a compliment that the film initially occupies the viewer in such a way that he later disappoints.

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times on March 25, 2005 that the film lived off the "extraordinary" portrayal of Daniel Day-Lewis. It is captivating, provocative and "ingeniously disturbing" . The film addresses the change in alternative ways of life as well as the end of dreams. He is the best work of the director.
