Asterix land of the gods (Original title: Astérix: Le Domaine des Dieux ) is a French computer animated film by Alexandre Astier and Louis Clichy from the year 2014. The film is based on the Asterix comic book The satellite town of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo and was on 26 Published November 2014 in France. The cinema release in Germany was on February 26, 2015.

action

In order to finally break the resistance of the Gauls, Caesar wants to build a gigantic satellite town for leisure-hungry Romans at the gates of the Gallic village . He hopes to awaken the desire for wealth and luxury in the Gauls and thus to break their resistance. Construction work is progressing slowly, as Asterix and Obelix use magical acorns to simply grow the cleared trees back. However, when they find out how the slaves should fare if the work does not go faster, they try to incite them to flee by bringing them magic potion. The slaves prefer to have paid work and work all the faster. When the Gauls want to demolish the completed first building, they cannot fight civilians already present. Some civilians have also settled in the Gauls village. In addition, the rather poorly running shops in the village develop into flourishing businesses due to the payment power of Roman customers. In contrast to Asterix, Obelix, Idefix and Miraculix, the villagers do not want to scare off their “customers” and even move to the satellite town themselves. Because of the satellite town and the flourishing tourism, there are hardly any wild boars to eat, which is particularly difficult for Obelix. The almost deserted village is decaying.

Caesar is so enthusiastic about the effect of his idea that he plans to build a theater instead of the village. The troops deployed manage to capture Miraculix and even Obelix, so that Asterix is surprised by the attackers the next morning. The Gauls are terrified of what is about to happen to their village, but feel unable to do anything. Asterix can first simulate still having magic potion, which stops the attack. While his friends hold the position, also supposedly with a magic potion, he manages to free Miraculix, Idefix and their son with the help of a befriended Roman family. They quickly prepare a magic potion, but it is not ready when Caesar arrives and orders the Gauls to be incarcerated. At the last moment, Obelix, who has regained his strength (after a meal from the vacant banquet), appears. He distributes the magic potion to the Gauls and the enemies can be defeated. Caesar gives in and agrees to compensate the civilians. After the Romans have left, Obelix tears down all the buildings in the satellite town after a sip of the magic potion.

reception

In its criticism, the film-dienst judged that the filmmakers gave the popular characters “a rounder, softer, yes, wax-like look”, without deviating from the “typical trademarks”. The film works "especially well for adults, especially when it comes to dialogue wit," but also focuses on the young audience. With Charly Hübner as Obelix and Milan Peschel as Asterix, the German dubbing voices are "aptly cast". Disappointing, however, are the 3D effects, which "give the images in the static sequences some depth" but are not convincing in the action scenes. Martin Schwickert of epd Film judged that die-hard Asterix fans "of course have to get used to the loss of the character format first" because of the new optical implementation, but one soon realizes "that the three-dimensional process also has its charms". If "the technical and creative quality of a Pixar film " has not yet been achieved, Asterix does not have to hide behind "the competitor Baymax from the Disney empire" in the land of the gods .

Awards

Film music composer Philippe Rombi received a nomination for an International Film Music Critics Award for the best original score in an animated film , but was left behind by John Powell , who received the prize for How To Train Your Dragon 2 .
