action

Hiro Hamada is a 13-year-old boy who lives in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo, a mix of San Francisco and Tokyo , who wastes his time on illegal bot fights. His older brother Tadashi, who doesn't like Hiro wasting his potential so much, takes him to his laboratory at his technical university. There, Hiro met Tadashi's friends, Gogo Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred, as well as the robot Baymax, a personal health companion that Tadashi developed. Amazed by the research, Hiro decides to go to this college. He presents his project “Microbots”, a swarm of small robots that are controlled by a so-called neurocranial transmitter. Professor Callaghan, the head of the program, is impressed and includes Hiro in his program. Alistair Krei, the president of Krei Tech, a large company that deals with robots, tries to buy the microbots from Hiro. Callaghan warns Hiro not to trust Krei. When a fire breaks out in the university during the evening, Tadashi runs back into the building to save Callaghan. The building explodes shortly afterwards and it appears that both of them are killed. Because of the loss of his brother, Hiro turns away from both his new found friends and his original plan to go to college.

One day, Hiro accidentally activates Baymax, who eventually follows one of Hiro's microbots to a secret warehouse. There they discover that someone is mass-producing Hiros microbots. They are then attacked by a masked man who controls the microbots. Realizing that this man stole his project motivates Hiro. So he decides to catch the masked man and equips Baymax with a combat suit and a combat chip with karate programs. After the masked man attacked Hiro, Baymax, Gogo, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred, they seek refuge in Fred's childhood home. Fred believes the masked man is Alistair Krei and that he stole the bots. Hiro designs superhero suits for himself and his friends, who thus form a superhero team. A further development of Baymax's scan enables Hiro to locate the masked man on a remote island.

When they arrive on the island, they discover an old krei laboratory for teleportation experiments. The teleportation test failed when a test pilot got into an unstable portal. The masked man now turns out not to be Krei, but to Professor Callaghan, who was able to survive in the fire with Hiro's stolen bots. Realizing that Tadashi died for no reason, Hiro furiously removes the health chip from Baymax and only leaves the battle chip. He orders Baymax to kill Callaghan. Baymax tries this until Honey puts the health chip back into Baymax. Hiro is slowed down by his friends and pointed out that the plan was only to catch the masked man, not to kill him. Angry with his friends, Hiro goes home and collapses. Baymax asks him if he would feel better if they killed Callaghan. To mitigate Hiro's loss, Baymax plays earlier recordings of Tadashi from Baymax's test phase. Hiro realizes that killing Callaghan is not what Tadashi would have wanted and makes up with his friends.

The group discovers that the test pilot was Callaghan's daughter, Abigail. Callaghan wants revenge on Krei for her death. He tries to destroy Krei Tech and Krei himself by restoring the teleportation portal. The team thwarted the plan by destroying the microbots, but the portal is still active. Baymax notices signs of life from Abigail, so he and Hiro fly into the portal to save her. On the way out, Baymax's combat armor suffers a defect. The only way to save Hiro and Abigail is to shoot them out of the portal with his rocket fist. Hiro doesn't want to leave him behind, but Baymax persuades Hiro to turn him off in tears. Hiro and Abigail fly back while Callaghan is arrested.

A little later, Hiro discovers Baymax's health chip in his rocket fist, on which all his memories and personality are stored. Then Hiro developed Baymax again. The six friends continue their work in the city, fulfilling Tadashi's dream of helping people in need. In a scene after the credits, Fred accidentally opens a secret door in his house and finds a superhero hideout. His father, a former superhero, hugs Fred and says they have a lot to catch up with.

reception

The reviews of the animated film were mostly positive.

Eva Thöne writes at Spiegel Online: “That Disney draws the characters softer than in the original is completely okay - Baymax doesn't want to be a niche product for die-hard action fans, but a film for the whole family. […] [Baymax] works […]. This is mainly due to the main characters, perhaps too soft, but also finely drawn. "

The film was also rated positively by Rotten Tomatoes (with 89%) and IMDb (with 7.8 out of 10) and Metacritic (74/100).

Frank Arnold from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He praised the connection between the traditions of the animated film from “East and West, American superheroes and Japanese [m] manga.” Despite the classic heroic story, the film proves its independence, “especially in the friendship between Hiro and Baymax, between comic moments and seriousness “Oscillate.
