action

As children, Elsa and her sister Anna learn from their father, King Agnarr, what once happened in the enchanted forest in the far north: their grandfather, King Runeard, the founder and first king of Arendelle, became friends with the tribe of the who lived there Northuldra and built a large dam. However, at the opening ceremonies, an armed dispute broke out. This enraged the spirits of the forest (earth, fire, air and water). Since then, a wall of fog has blocked the way into and out of the forest. While Runeard was falling in battle, Prince Agnarr escaped with the help of an unknown savior and became the new King of Arendelle. The fog is still there: no one can enter or leave the forest. Since the girls can't get enough of these stories, Queen Iduna sings them a bedtime song about the mysterious river Ahtohallan, which supposedly knows the secrets of the past.

Three years after her coronation (and the plot of the first film ), the ice queen Elsa is celebrating the falling autumn in her kingdom with her younger sister Anna, the snowman Olaf, with Kristoff and his reindeer Sven. Lately she keeps hearing a mysterious female singing voice. She can no longer ignore the voice during a charade game . At night she follows the voice outside and unintentionally wakes up the ghosts. Unleashed in this way, the ghosts drive the residents out of the city. Grand Pabbie and the troll colony rush to Arendelle to help. As Grand Pabbie shares, Elsa needs to fix things by finding out the truth about the kingdom's past. From this Elsa concludes that she has to follow the voice that she always hears.

Together they go on a journey into the enchanted forest. Their magic enables them to cross the mist. The spirit of the wind appears in the form of a tornado, which Elsa brings to a standstill by creating snow showers. The result is ice sculptures depicting situations from Elsa's father Agnarr's past. An ice sculpture shows that Queen Iduna was a member of the Northuldra. It was she who saved Agnarr. In the forest, the Northuldra and Arendelle soldiers are still fighting. Elsa and Anna broker a truce. When the spirit of the fire becomes noticeable, Elsa discovers that a small magical salamander is hidden behind it. She can soothe him. Elsa later learns that there is still a fifth spirit that connects people and the magic of nature.

Elsa travels north with her sister and Olaf. There they discover the wreck of the parent ship. Inside, they discover a map that shows the way to the mysterious Ahtohallan River, which is supposed to help shed light on the past. Elsa is devastated to learn that her parents were killed trying to find answers about her. Anna insists on going with them, but Elsa doesn't want to lose her again, hugs her goodbye and sends Anna and Olaf away in an ice boat for their safety and travels alone. The two are stranded in a cave at the bottom of a waterfall.

Elsa meets the spirit of water, who guards the river or glacier Ahtohallan in the form of a horse in the sea. Upon arrival at the glacier, Elsa learns that the mysterious voice is that of her late mother Iduna. Elsa's powers are a gift from magical nature because Iduna once selflessly saved Agnarr. As a result, Elsa became the aforementioned fifth spirit, which compensates for differences. Elsa is also given pictures from the past. She learns that the dam was built to limit Northulda resources, as King Runeard mistrusted the tribe who believed in the power of magic. It was also he who started the argument by attacking the Northulda leader. Elsa informs her sister Anna about the new findings before she freezes to ice in Ahtohallan herself.

Anna comes to the conclusion that if peace is to return, the dam must be destroyed. She finds the sleeping earth spirits, wakes them up and lures them to the dam, which the giants throw at and destroy with huge boulders. Elsa, freed from the curse, returns to Arendelle and is just in time to fend off the huge flash flood that emanates from the destroyed dam. So after 34 years the wall of fog will also disappear.

After several awkward attempts, Kristoff finally submits a successful marriage proposal to Anna, which she accepts. As Elsa explains, she and her sister will now build the bridge between humans and magical spirits. Anna becomes the new queen of Arendelle, while Elsa now protects the no longer enchanted forest. Even so, she will visit Arendelle regularly, especially as peace has been restored in the kingdom.

reception

Martin Schwickert rates the film as “good” in the Rheinische Post and says: “Even if the story, which jumps around on different levels of time, reality and dream, often seems a bit overloaded, Lee and Buck succeeded on the glittering surface of a Disney fairy tale to send their heroines through conflicts of psychological depth. "

With a budget of 150 million US dollars, worldwide revenue from cinema screenings is 1.45 billion US dollars, of which the film grossed 477.37 million in North America alone. This puts it in 3rd place among the financially most successful films of 2019 and 10th (as of August 8, 2020) among the most financially successful films of all time . In Germany, the film recorded a total of 6,754,377 moviegoers, through which it was able to generate 55.05 million euros and is number 1 in the 2019 annual charts .
