action

In a world inhabited by anthropomorphic mammals, Judy Hopps from the rural village of Bunnyborrow in Nageria fulfills her dream of becoming the first rabbit to be a police officer. After she graduated from the police academy as the best of her year, she is introduced by Mayor Leodore Lionheart, a lion, as a new member of the Zoomania Police Department (ZPD). Police Chief Bogo, a buffalo, but does not share the currently running manhunts after 14 missing mammals, but as a traffic warden , as he has doubts about its potential to be a real cop. During one of her shifts she meets the fox and con artist Nick Wilde.

During the next shift, Judy witnessed a theft at a florist's, whereupon she followed and arrested the thief, a weasel named Herzog von Pitzbühl. Despite her success, she is almost suspended from duty for leaving her post and inciting the chaos that ensued during the chase. The appearance of the otter lady Mrs. Otterton, who visits Chief Bogo because of her missing husband Emmett Otterton, interrupts the suspension and Judy Hopps promises Mrs. Otterton to take over the case. When the second mayor Dawn Bellwether, a sheep, also appears and learns that the integration program for small mammals that Judy has made possible her education is starting to show its first successes, Chief Bogo has no choice but to not fire Judy. He gives her 48 hours to solve the case, otherwise she should quit - which Judy reluctantly accepts. In the case file, she finds a clue that leads her to Nick Wilde. She tricked him into helping her with this case.

After finding out Otterton's license plates at the motor vehicle office, which only works for sloths, Judy and Nick lead the way to gang boss Mr. Big, a shrew. Mr. Big informs the couple that Otterton, their florist, went wild and attacked his chauffeur Manchas, a black jaguar. Judy and Nick seek out Manchas, who says that “Kings of the Night” were responsible for Otterton's suddenly wild behavior, before he himself becomes uncontrollably wild and pursues the two in a rage. Judy calls for reinforcements, but when Bogo arrives with more police officers, Manchas has disappeared. Bogo then demands Judy's badge, but Nick defends Judy. He points out that Judy has ten hours left to solve the case. Then they set off together.

When Nick realizes that the road security cameras must have recorded Mancha's disappearance, they contact Dawn Bellwether. You observe his kidnappers, timber wolves , on the records , which Judy then takes to be the mentioned "kings of the night". Judy and Nick locate Mr. Otterton's location in a former hospital, where they also find the other missing mammals and manchas. They are all predators that just like Manchas have gone wild. Judy and Nick overhear Mayor Lionheart talking to Dr. Madge Honey Badger on the state of predators, the content of which Lionheart does not want published due to its own nature as a predator. Judy films this conversation, whereupon she and Nick escape from the hospital. This is surrounded by the police and Mayor Lionheart and Dr. Honey Badger are arrested.

Because of the friendship with Nick that developed during the joint investigation, Judy asks him if he would like to join the Zoomania Police Department and be her partner. During the press conference that followed, Judy mentions that all wild animals are just predators and that they have returned to their “natural instincts”. Nick, who as a fox himself is one of the predators, refuses the offer to work as her partner because of these words and leaves the building injured and appalled by Judy's words. In the weeks after the case was closed, predators continue to go wild, and fear and discrimination against predators have become part of everyday life in zoomania. Judy, plagued by guilt, quits her job as a policewoman.

Back in Bunnyborrow, Judy learns that certain psychotropic flowers are popularly known as "kings of the night". Judy returns to Zoomania and makes up with Nick. They go to Pitzbühl, who stole the "Kings of the Night" for a secret laboratory. Both find the laboratory with scientists in an old subway car. They are all rams working on a serum that drives the predators wild and can be applied with a gun. Judy and Nick drive the subway car and the evidence towards ZPD, but are followed by the goats.

On the way to the ZPD they cause an accident with the subway car in a subway station. Via this they reach a museum where they meet Bellwether who tries to take the evidence. Realizing that Bellwether is the mastermind behind a major conspiracy, Judy and Nick try to escape. Bellwether got hold of the evidence in the form of a pistol and the serum. To get rid of Judy, she shoots Nick in the expectation that Nick would also mutate into a beast and kill Judy in this state. In fact, he attacks them and pushes them into a corner. Bellwether, who is watching the process, is persuaded by Judy to reveal her conspiracy through specific questions: In order to turn the majority of prey animals in zoomania against a common enemy, namely the predators that seem to mutate into wild beasts for no reason, she developed the serum and have them regularly used against predators. This should oust Mayor Lionheart, a lion, from office and secure her a permanent position at the helm of Zoomania. However, Bellwether fell for a trick by Judy and Nick: Nick had previously exchanged the serum in the pistol for a harmless blueberry, and Judy secretly recorded Bellwether's confessions - Nick's attack on Judy was just a pretense. At that moment, Chief Bogo appears together with an emergency team and arrests Bellwether and her helpers.

A few months later, Judy is back on duty. The wild animals are protected by an antidote developed by Dr. Honey Badger has been developed, has been cured. Inspired by the faith that Judy has put in him, Nick becomes the first fox as a police officer and Judy's new partner.

Byron Howard and Rich Moore directed the film, and Jared Bush and Phil Johnston did the script work . The German animation filmmaker Matthias Lechner acted as the film's artistic director and environment art director. After the premiere of the film, Lechner made a large selection of concept drawings available on his private website, which provide an insight into the history of the film's origins, although some of them have been discarded.

Alternative title

In the USA , both the film and the eponymous city have the title Zootopia (as a suitcase word from zoo and utopia ). In most European countries, the film and the city were referred to as Zootropolis (a word created from zoo and metropolis ). The British press suspects the existence of a European registered trademark of a Danish zoo as a possible reason for the renaming. In Germany, the film was released under the title Zoomania , which is also the name of the city depicted in the film. The renaming refers to the film title as well as to all overlay and audible mentions of the city name; however, the original title Zootopia is used in the bonus material on the DVD / Blu-ray . The renaming from Zootropolis to Zoomania was made due to the copyrights of Kay Fischer, who wrote a book with the similar title Zootopolis in 2010 .

Film music

The score was composed by Michael Giacchino . The soundtrack to the film includes 22 songs and was released on March 4, 2016. The soundtrack entered the soundtrack album charts at number 8 in March 2016. The song Try Everything sung by Shakira reached its highest spot on the Billboard Hot 100 at # 65 . In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Music , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations. The song Try Everything included on the soundtrack and sung by Shakira was included in the longlist for Best Film Song .

reception

Reviews

The film convinced 98 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.1 out of a possible 10 points. From the American Film Institute was Zoomania in the top 10 list of the November 2016 AFI Movies of the Year added.

Kai Mihm from epd Film sees the film as a parable of people, whose statement about “tolerance, […] prejudices and the coexistence of different ethnic groups” fits very well with the current times. Towards the end, however, the film comes uncomfortably close to racial teachings when “the dangerous hunting instinct in predators is explained as 'part of their DNA'”: “With an abundantly constructed resolution that negates animal biology, the film comes off this thin ice again . This shows how quickly the fable principle reaches its limits. ”In addition, Mihm believes“ that the makers did not really know how to develop their beautiful basic idea into a well-rounded, permanently entertaining film. ”

Martin Schwickert from Die Zeit, on the other hand, sees the film as “refreshingly complex” and recognizes Judy as a child-friendly figure of identification who shows that one can learn to put aside one's own prejudices against predators like the fox. The friendship between Nick and Judy depicted in the film illuminates the mutual prejudice structures in a differentiated manner. Schwickert recognizes imagery in the film that fits the current state of our society and sees parallels to Pegida and the incidents on New Year's Eve in Cologne , but also generally to the return and political exploitation of xenophobia and racism . From the German Film and Media Review was Zoomania with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “The film also has a lot to offer visually: Imaginatively equipped sets, lots of visual gags as well as incredibly dynamic image guidance, which not only offers a great variety of perspectives in expansive journeys, but also the advantages over an artificial one the real world to the full. The 3D technology pleasantly supports this world of experience and subordinates itself to the rhythmically flawless narration at all times. "

Gross profit

The film had the most successful theatrical release in the history of Walt Disney Animation Studios . On the opening weekend, the film grossed more than 75 million US dollars in North American cinemas, putting it at number one on the box-office charts. Ultimately, North America had more than $ 341 million in revenue, making Zoomania the seventh most successful movie of the year . In Germany, too, the film immediately reached number one on the cinema charts, with an audience of 690,000 and revenues of 6 million euros. In the annual ranking of the German cinema charts, the film was the second most popular film in 2016, with over 3.8 million visitors . The film was also very successful in China, where it grossed over 235 million US dollars, making it the second most successful film of the year there. Total worldwide revenues are $ 1.02 billion, making the film the fourth most successful film of 2016 and currently ranks fifth among the most successful animated films, behind Frozen , Minions , Toy Story 3 and Finding Dory . In the list of the world's most successful films, the film ranks 45th (as of August 8, 2020).

Trivia

One scene in the last part of the film takes place in a makeshift chemistry laboratory. Here Judy and Nick overhear a telephone conversation from one of the rams, which is interrupted by the hammering on the door of the other sheep. The person called said he had to hang up because "Woolter and Jesse" would be back. This scene (and its ambience) is a reference to the Breaking Bad series , in which Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are the main characters.
