action

Jim Hawkins is a fourteen-year-old boy who lives on the planet Montressor with his mother, who tries to support herself and her son with her inn. Jim, a passionate solar surfer, has come into conflict with the law several times, and the police have just brought him home. He secretly dreams of a future as a space traveler like his father was, but he has little hope. Even the scientist Dr. Dalbert Doppler, an old family friend, thinks he is a failure.

Then Jim watches a spaceship crash near the inn . The old pirate Billy Bones emerges from the wreck and can just entrust Jim with a mysterious gold-colored ball and whisper a warning ("Beware of the cyborg!") In his ear before he dies. When his pursuers appear shortly afterwards, Dr. Doppler and the Hawkins' narrowly escaped. The inn goes up in flames behind them. They flee to Doppler, where Jim realizes that the ball contains a hidden mechanism: It is a holographic treasure map that shows the way to the mysterious "treasure planet", where the legendary pirate captain Nathaniel Flint his immeasurable treasure, the "Loot from the Thousand." Worlds ", should have hidden.

At the spaceport arrived, the two go on board the ship awning RLS Legacy , which is commanded by the resolute Captain Amelia. She and her first officer, Mr. Arrow, are absolutely not happy with the seedy crew that Doppler hired, but they are still on their way. Jim becomes a cabin boy and the charismatic Smutje allocated Long John Silver - posing as a human-like alien - Cyborg turns.

Although initially suspicious, Jim soon trusts Silver. He protects him from the coarse crew and shows him everything you need to know about working on a solar sail ship. For the boy, he becomes a replacement for his own father who abandoned the family years ago. But when the ship comes under the influence of a supernova and Jim is responsible for the safety lines, the malicious Mr. Scroop cuts Mr. Arrow's line. The first officer gets sucked into the black hole and the crew blames Jim. Once again he is convinced that he is a failure.

Shortly before arriving at the treasure planet, Jim plays hide and seek with Silver's loyal companion, the shape shifter Morph. When he finds him below deck in a barrel, he overhears a conversation between the crew: It turns out that Silver and the others are pirates and each other hired to steal the booty from the thousand worlds. Silver claims he was only kind enough to Jim to fool him. Now is the time for the mutiny , but thanks to Jim, he and Dr. Doppler with the Captain and Morph flee. You crash in a dinghy, with Amelia seriously injured.

Jim and Morph, who hid the treasure map on board the Legacy , go in search of a shelter and meet the confused robot BEN, who has been living a solitary existence on the treasure planet since the days of Captain Flint. He leads her to his house, which is soon surrounded by Silver and his people. Through a secret system of underground passages, Jim, BEN and Morph get to the dinghy and collect the treasure map from the Legacy . But they have to fight a fight with Mr. Scroop, which Jim can only narrowly win. He also learns that he is not to blame for Mr. Arrow's death.

Back at BEN's house, Silver and his gang's friends are expected, who force Jim to activate the treasure map. Together they follow the holographic trail and find a huge portal that Captain Flint once used to be able to go on a raid in all parts of the galaxy . With the help of BEN's fragmentary memories, they can be brought from the portal to the center of the artificially created treasure planet, where they can find the loot from the thousand worlds. But just as Jim Silvers tries to take advantage of inattentiveness to flee with his share of the prey, he and BEN come across the remains of Captain Flint - who is still holding the lost memory board of the robot in his hands. When it is reinserted, the latter remembers Flint's secret plan: a trap that will blow up the planet if an unauthorized person enters the treasury. Jim manages to get Flint's ship loaded with part of the treasure going again, but then Silver comes on board. However, before a fight can break out between them, the ship is hit by an energy beam and Jim falls overboard. Although Silver would have the opportunity to escape with the rest of the treasure, he sacrifices the greatest chance of his life at the last moment and saves the boy's life.

Around them the planet begins to break apart. Silver and Jim can barely escape to the Legacy with BEN and Morph while the treasure burns up in the fire. However, the ship is too badly damaged, so Jim flies to the portal and sets it on Montressor. At the very last second, the Legacy escapes while the treasure planet explodes behind them. In the general glee, only Jim notices that Silver, who is threatened with jail for mutiny, wants to secretly escape. However, in the face of their friendship, he lets him go after the old pirate entrusts him with Morph.

Some time later, Jim's mother rebuilt her inn with the money that Silver gave his protégé shortly before he fled. Doppler and Amelia got married and had four children, and Jim is now a cadet in the Galactic Navy. At the inauguration ceremony, he looks out to the stars and thinks of Long John Silver, who has proven to be a good friend despite everything.

Background information

Treasure Planet is a free film adaptation of the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson . The film tries to transfer as many elements of the classic original as possible into the futuristic scenario: the one-legged Long John Silver becomes a cyborg , the yellowed treasure map becomes a hologram and the eccentric hermit Ben Gunn becomes the short-circuiting robot BEN ( B io e lectronic N Navigator). In the Making-Of Artbook, the artists comment on an approach to the project they call the 70/30 rule, which means the designs should look seventy percent antiquated and thirty percent futuristic.

The idea of translating Treasure Island into a science fiction scenario can already be found in the German-Italian television series Der Schatz im All (1986–1987).

The world of Treasure Planet only adheres to physical laws very freely. On the whole, a classic pirate scenario was moved into space. The spaceships are actually flying sailing ships whose crews can breathe in space , here called etherium. Phenomena such as star implosions or the lack of gravity were retained, however, in order to be able to incorporate alternatives to the dangers of proper seafaring in the story.

The name of the ship, RLS Legacy , means Robert Louis Stevenson 's Legacy (" Robert Louis Stevenson's Legacy ").

criticism

"The film, which is as clever as it is lovingly designed, stands out on the narrative level due to its adaptation to contemporary tastes, whereby the seriousness of the original is modified in favor of child-friendly and humorous entertainment."
