Raya and the Last Dragon (English for Raya and the Last Dragon ) is an American computer animation film directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins and is due to hit North American cinemas on March 12, 2021. The film is the 59th production by Walt Disney Animation Studios .

action

Raya and the Last Dragon is set in the fictional land of Kumandra . Kumandra is made up of five different clans. Dragons once lived in the land, but they have disappeared as a result of a dark, sinister force.

This is the place where the warrior Raya lives, who sets out with a group of outsiders to find the last dragon. This should bring light and unity back into the world. Ultimately, Raya finds the dragon Sisu, who appears in human form. Raya helps Sisu regain her strength so that Sisu can appear in dragon form again.

production

On May 24, 2018, it was reported that Walt Disney Animation Studios was working on a new project directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins . The film, which should be based on a screenplay by Kiel Murray , was initially titled Dragon Empire (English for: Dragon Empire ). It was also announced on May 24, 2019 that Jamie Chung had expressed interest in the setting of the lead role, at the time still called Jan-nin. The following October it was announced that the production would be by Osnat Shurer , with the script now being written by Adele Lim instead of by Murray . Lim himself comes from Malaysia and let the setting of the fictional country Kumandra be inspired by Southeast Asian culture in terms of themes and design.

On August 24, 2019, the film was officially announced under the title Raya and the Last Dragon at Expo D23 by the Walt Disney Company as an "epic fantasy adventure with a Southeast Asian theme". It was also Cassie Steele announced as a voice of the protagonist Raya and the rapper Awkwafina as the spokesperson of the Water Dragon Sisu. Also at D23-Expo 2019, the start date for Raya and the Last Dragon was initially announced for November 25, 2020. Disney previously occupied this slot with the film Gigantic , but stopped production in 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , this date was later postponed to March 12, 2021.
