Hokkaidō Shimbun

The Hokkaidō Shimbun ( Japanese. 北海道 新聞 , abbreviated 道 新 Dōshin ) is a Japanese , regional daily newspaper in Hokkaidō . In 2006 their circulation was around 1,214,000 (morning editions) + 657,000 (evening editions), meanwhile the morning edition is less than a million. It is published by the publisher of the same name, the KK Hokkaidō Shimbunsha ( 株式会社 北海道 新聞 社 , English “The Hokkaido Shimbun Press”) based in the capital Sapporo . The sports newspaper Dōshin Sports ( 道 新 ス ポ ー ツ ) , which has been appearing since 1982, also belongs to the publishing house .

The Hokkaidō Shimbun is one of the so-called "block sheets" ( ブ ロ ッ ク 紙 burokku-shi ); These were originally regional newspapers that had been created during the Pacific War to make it easier to control the press landscape under pressure from the government ( Ministry of the Interior ): There were to be three national newspapers , including only prefecture newspapers (directive 一 県 一 紙 ikken isshi , "One prefecture , one newspaper") as well as a few regional newspapers each for several prefectures. Even after the war, these original “block sheets” shared a large part of the regional newspaper market among themselves. Today it is generally used to refer to large regional newspapers above a certain circulation with a leading position in their region. The Hokkaidō Shimbun was created in 1942 through the amalgamation of twelve newspapers in Hokkaidō. The oldest forerunner, the Hokkai Shimbun ( 北海 新聞 ), dates back to 1887; on November 1, 1942, this was combined with: Hokkai Times ( 北海 タ イ ム ス ), Otaru Shimbun ( 小樽 新聞 ), Shin Hakodate ( 新 函館 ), Muroran Nippō ( 室 蘭 日報 ), Asahikawa Shimbun ( 旭川 新聞 ), Asahikawa Times ( 旭川 スタ イ ム ム ム ス ス ), Kitami Shimbun ( 北 見 新聞 ), Tokachi Mainichi Shimbun ( 十勝 毎 日 新聞 ), Abashiri Shimpō ( 網 走 新 報 ), Kushiro Shimbun ( 釧 路 新聞 ) and Nemuro Shimbun ( 根 室 新聞 ).
