Lauren Elizabeth "Laurie" Metcalf (born June 16, 1955 in Carbondale , Illinois ) is an American actress . She has received three Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards , among others .

Life

Metcalf first studied German and later anthropology at Illinois State University , where he first came into contact with theater through fellow students John Malkovich , Glenne Headly , Joan Allen , Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry . She finally switched to theater and began her career as an actress after completing her studies in 1977 at the theater in Chicago as a member of the Steppenwolf Theater Company . She received critical acclaim for her roles in The Glass Menagerie (1979) and Balm in Gilead (1983). Her role in Balm in Gilead earned her a Theater World Award and an Obie Award in 1984 . From the mid-1980s, there were also larger film roles in films such as Susan… Desperately Wanted (1985), A Man à la Carte (1987), Alone With Uncle Buck (1989), JFK - Tatort Dallas (1991) and Mistress - Die Geliebten von Hollywood (1992).

Metcalf became internationally known from 1988 onwards, primarily for her role as Jackie Harris in the comedy series Roseanne . For this role she was awarded the Emmy in 1992, 1993 and 1994 in the category "Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series". After the series ended, she made a striking appearance in 1997 as an over-the-top reporter in the horror film Scream 2 .

Her guest roles as Cora in Monk and Carolyn Bigsby in Desperate Housewives were rewarded with another Emmy nomination in 2006 and 2007. Since 2007 she has appeared on the television series The Big Bang Theory as Sheldon's mother.

For her role as Marion McPherson in Greta Gerwig's tragic comedy Lady Bird , she received numerous awards for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 . In the same year she stood in front of the camera again as Jackie Harris for a nine-part new edition of Roseanne .

In addition to her involvement in cinema and television productions, she also took on roles in theater productions.

Metcalf was married to her Steppenwolf colleague Jeff Perry from 1983 to 1992 . The actress Zoe Perry emerged from the marriage. From 1993 Metcalf was dating Matt Roth , whom she met while filming Roseanne . The couple, who have three children together, separated in 2008. The divorce filed by Roth in 2011 took place in May 2014.
