action

24-year-old Kara Zor-El came to Earth from the planet Krypton at the age of 13 and was adopted by the earthly Danvers family. In the event of an unexpected incident, she is forced to use her superpowers, which she had hidden for a long time in favor of a "normal" lifestyle, and to intervene to save her. In doing so, she reveals her superpowers to the public. Now she has to learn to reconcile her double life as personal assistant to the head of the media company CatCo and as a superhero who protects National City. At the same time, the earth is threatened by alien as well as human villains, which are being fought by the earthly organization Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO) . Kara's adoptive sister Alex is an agent of this organization, which is led by Hank Henshaw ( Martian Manhunter ); for the fourth season she follows this as director.

Charisma

production

In September 2014, Warner Bros. Television announced that it would produce a television series about the character Supergirl . Greg Berlanti , who was also the creator and producer of the Arrow and The Flash series , and Allison Adler were to serve as executive producers , who would also write the script together. Shortly thereafter, Berlanti confirmed the series and on September 19, 2014 it was confirmed that CBS will air the series. The first season was planned to be broadcast for the 2015/16 television season.

The series was originally presented to The CW in the summer of 2014 . The broadcaster, who had the ratings for The Flash , which had not yet started , was not yet ready to put the series into production. Therefore, the producers turned to the broadcaster CBS, from which they were awarded the contract for the production.

In January 2015, Melissa Benoist was confirmed to star in the title role. Two months later it was confirmed that Blake Neely , who is also the composer of the Arrow and The Flash series , would also compose the melody for Supergirl . The series was originally scheduled to first air in November 2015, but the pilot episode was brought forward to October 26, 2015.

The costume designer Colleen Atwood , who was previously responsible for the costume of the main characters from Arrow and The Flash , is also the costume designer for the heroine of the series Supergirl . In doing so, she tried to keep as close as possible to the comic book as well as to make the costume a little intimidating.

Filming for the pilot began on March 4, 2015 and ended 25 days later.

Kara's adoptive parents, scientists who once helped Superman, are represented by Helen Slater and Dean Cain . Slater made her acting debut as Supergirl in the 1984 film adaptation ; Cain had his breakthrough as Superman in the television series Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark . Teri Hatcher, also one of the leading actresses from the latter television series, portrays the antagonist Rhea in the second season.

The first season of the series premieres in parallel with the second season of the series Gotham , which is broadcast on Fox . This means that two episodes of DC Comics will premiere in parallel. Nina Tassler, the chairwoman of CBS, justified this by saying the series appeal to a different audience: while Gotham is aimed more at an adult audience, Supergirl is said to be aimed at a family audience.

At the end of November 2015, CBS increased the order from initially 13 to 20 episodes for the first season. Even if 22 episodes have not been ordered, it is referred to as a “full season”.

The main actress Melissa Benoist is doubled in the series by Jessie Graff .

main characters

Supergirl / Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers

Kara Zor-El was born to Krypton as the daughter of Zor-El and Alura Zor-EL. She is the cousin of Superman . At the age of 13, she had to leave her exploding home planet and was sent to Earth to take care of her cousin, who was a baby at the time. The blast from the explosion threw her space capsule off course. As a result, she got into the so-called “phantom zone” for several years, within which she did not age. When her capsule landed on earth, her cousin, unlike Kara, was already an adult and she was staying with an adoptive family, the Danvers'.

In the following years she hid her identical with Superman forces largely and worked as an assistant to the Medienmogulin Cat Grant and their companies Cat.Co . When her adoptive sister sat in a crashing plane, she revealed her powers and since then has been protecting her hometown National City as a Supergirl in collaboration with the DEO. On the side she continues to work under her cover identity Kara Danvers for Cat.Co , where she has meanwhile been promoted to reporter. For additional camouflage, she always wears glasses and her hair never open in public beyond her activities as a supergirl.

Kara has a good relationship with her earth family. She gets along very well with her adoptive parents, Eliza and Jeremiah. Although she only calls them by their first name and not "Mom" and "Dad", she loves them very much and is grateful for everything they have done for her.

The person closest to her from everyone else is her adoptive sister, Alex. However, in their youth they did not get along at all and often argued. Alex was jealous and jealous of her because she had to do without a lot since Kara's arrival on earth. As a result, she repeatedly accused Kara of ruining her life. Kara, in turn, found it difficult to get used to a new life on earth. She was very homesick and felt left alone by everyone else. Only when Kara's best friend Kenny Li was murdered and she and Alex caught his killer did their relationship improve increasingly. Kara was finally starting to feel at home and Alex was slowly beginning to realize how selfish and selfish she had behaved towards Kara. A behavior that she has not been able to forgive until today. Now she has a close sisterly relationship with Alex. They often meet at nurses' night after work to talk or to watch movies. They usually drink wine and eat Chinese dishes that Alex brings along. Kara also keeps emphasizing that Alex is the only reason she feels at home on earth and that she loves her very much. This becomes clear when Alex comes out to her as gay in the second season. Although she was a little shaken by it at first and took a moment to understand it, it was completely okay for her and has been at her side ever since. She also comforted, for example, a tearful Alex who was initially rejected by Maggie and therefore considered her coming out to be a mistake. Kara shook her head and hugged her and assured her that she was proud of her.

Dr. Alexandra "Alex" Danvers

Dr. Alexandra "Alex" Danvers is the daughter of the scientist couple Elisa and Jeremiah Danvers as well as the older adoptive sister of Kara. At a young age she was often jealous of the latter, but has now developed a close relationship with her sister, who she loves very much and always tries to protect. She is highly intelligent and has a PhD in bioengineering, but after graduating she got into a life crisis due to a lack of professional prospects. This resulted in her spending her nights in clubs excessively and drinking a lot of alcohol. She tried to cope with her doubts and problems, such as her repressed homosexuality and the loss of her father. She was arrested for "drinking under the influence" one evening when J'onn J'onzz came into her life as Hank Henshaw and visited her in prison. He recruited her for the DEO , for which she has been working ever since. At the end of the third season, she rises to their head. In season two, after years of rejection, she finally finds the courage to stand up for her sexual orientation after she met Maggie Sawyer, who is also a lesbian policewoman. She encourages her to stop hiding her true feelings and tell her family too. The first person she eventually talks to about her homosexuality is her sister Kara. She is slightly shocked and confused at first, but has absolutely no problem with it and has been supporting her ever since. Little by little, her mother and friends also find out about it. She came out at the age of 28 and has been an openly lesbian ever since. At times she was in love with Maggie Sawyer, to whom she had also become engaged. But since she didn't want any children, they separated again. She is now with Kelly Olsen.

J'onn J'onzz / Hank Henshaw / Martian Manhunter / John Jones

David Harewood aka J'onn J'onzz

J'onn J'onzz comes from the planet Mars, where he belonged to the green Martians ethnic group . The latter were largely wiped out by white Martians in a genocide, which is why he fled to Earth and was tracked down by the DEO in the Peruvian rainforest . After knocking out its leader Hank Henshaw in a fight, he uses his shapeshifter ability to take on his appearance and identity. Years later he recruits Alex Danvers for the DEO , for which her father had also worked. When she investigates, J'onn J'onzz reveals his true identity to her, which he later reveals in a fight against an irradiated Kara. He was then arrested, but pardoned a short time later. For diplomatic reasons, however, he keeps Henshaw's shape. At the end of the third season he withdraws from the DEO and makes Alex his successor. He now works as a private detective under the name of John Jones .

Lena Luthor

Katie McGrath aka Lena Luthor

Lena Luthor is a highly intelligent entrepreneur and researcher who moved to National City at the beginning of season two. She is the half-sister of Lex Luthor, one of Superman's greatest opponents. Since he is in prison for his crimes against Kara's cousin, she takes over the management of the family-owned company Luthor Corp , which she renames to L-Corp for image reasons . Unlike her half-brother or her mother Lillian Luthor, who have an immeasurable hatred of aliens and who also use corpses to eradicate them, she is friendly and helpful and has no recognizable, negative feelings towards aliens. She rejects the atrocities of her mother and brother without exception and does not like to be compared to either of them, since she has always tried to prove that there is also "a good Luthor". She is friends with Kara, but doesn't know that she is also a Supergirl. At the beginning of the third season she bought the media group Cat.Co.

Brainiac 5 / Brainy / Querl Dox

Brainiac 5 - called Brainy - is half human and half computer. As part of the Legion, he has come from the future to take down the world killer Pestilence , who usually does great damage a millennium later than Blight . Since this succeeds, however, one of his opponents survives, which is why he stays in the present and Winn goes into the future with the Legion. His style of language is reminiscent of a computer, which is why he often gives probabilities for certain events. He has blue skin and white hair, which he exchanges for a Mediterranean appearance - dark complexion and black hair - with the help of a "body image generator".

Nia Nal / Dreamer

Nia Nal starts working as a reporter for Cat.Co at the beginning of the fourth season . Cat Grant came to this position on the recommendation of the former company boss. She is initially looked after by Kara. Her mother was an alien from the planet Naltor, her father was human. Both parents have always believed that aliens and humans can live together. She is therefore half human, half Naltorian, but was born on earth. She can foresee future events in her dreams. She is also a transgender .

Dr. Kelly Olsen

Kelly Olsen is the younger sister of James Olsen. She is a psychologist and has her first appearance in the middle of the fourth season. She is with Alex Danvers.

Former main characters

Cathrine "Cat" Grant

Cat Grant is the head of the media group Cat.Co . She is in her mid-fifties and pays great attention to her appearance, which is mainly reflected in her expensive outfits. She always demands the maximum from her employees - including Kara. She is also very eloquent and sarcastic and has two sons. She has a weakness for Kara's cousin Clark Kent alias Superman, whom she picks on, which Kara doesn't like at all and also finds slightly disgusting. At the beginning of the second season, she takes vacation in Bhutan , from which she returns towards the end of the season. A short time later, the US President named her as her secretary, which is why she sold Cat.Co to Lena Luthor and left National City.

Maggie Sawyer

Maggie Sawyer is a detective for the National City Police Department, who intermittently has a relationship with Alex Danvers and is later even engaged to her. But since she didn't want any children, Alex finally separates from her with a heavy heart.

Mon-El by Daxam / Mike Matthews

Mon-El is the son of Queen Rhea and King Lar Gand and thus the Crown Prince of Daxam. At the end of the first season he lands on earth with a space capsule and is then looked after by Kara. At first, however, he is not interested in a superhero existence and refuses to pursue a regular job, much to the displeasure of Kara, who got him an internship at Cat.Co under his cover identity Mike Matthews . Nevertheless, a love-like relationship is developing between them. When he is found by his parents, he refuses to come with them, which is why his mother decides to invade Earth and wants to marry him to Lena Luthor. When the other Daxamites - including his mother - die from lead poisoning in the earth's atmosphere, he is able to withstand such a situation for a short time due to his long stay on earth. Yet he must leave the earth; his spaceship gets into a wormhole, so that a thousand years later it lands in the future.

He marries Imra aka Saturn Girl and forms the legion with her and Brainiac 5 . In the meantime, they travel back in time to eliminate the world killer Pestilence before she can cause great damage in the future. His behavior is now more dutiful and adult, he doesn't want to know anything about his prince title, for example. Kara is irritated by his marriage to Imra. When the world killer Reign is also defeated, he travels back to the future with Imra and Winn, who takes Brainiac's place.

Samantha Arias / Reign

Odette Annable aka Samantha Arias

Samantha Arias, mother of a school-age daughter, arrives in National City early in season three to work for L-Corp. Due to a few incidents, she shows superhuman abilities without a plausible explanation. When she investigates, her mother reveals to her that she is of extraterrestrial origin and that she was not supposedly adopted as claimed. Just like Kara, she comes from the planet Krypton. A short time later she is awakened for the first time as the so-called "world killer" Reign, who is supposed to cleanse the earth from all sin. The transformation always takes place with lightning. Similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , Samantha Arias is practically schizophrenic and cannot remember her activities as Reign . Only Lena Luthor finds out the secret and helps to separate the two identities. As Reign she often works with the world killers Purity and Pestilence . However, in contrast to them, Samantha survived the fight with Supergirl and managed to eliminate her evil alter ego. She then moves to Metropolis to manage an L-Corp branch there.

Winslow "Winn" Schott

Winn Schott - a typical nerd - initially works as an IT expert for Cat.Co. Kara was the first to reveal herself to him about her supernatural abilities. He then designs her suit for her identity as a Supergirl. From the second season he works for the DEO and designs the protective clothing for Olsen's activities as Guardian, whom he also assists as a technician. Towards the end of the third season he travels into the future with the Legion , while Brainiac 5 , of which this was previously a member, takes up his position with the DEO.

He is also the son of Toyman, who forced him to participate in one of his criminal activities after his prison break.

Ben Lockwood / Agent Liberty

Ben Lockwood, son of a steel construction company, was initially a university professor. While he originally did not share his father's anti-alien views, he began to have doubts in the following years. For example, aliens founded a company that produces steel-superior "NTH metal", which caused the family-owned company to run into economic difficulties and later had to close. In addition, the family home was destroyed in the Daxamite attack. When he increasingly expressed his aversion to aliens in lectures, he was fired, which further exacerbated his financial difficulties. As a result, he began to distribute leaflets on the street that raised the mood against aliens. This caught the attention of the siblings Mery and Otis Graves, two former Cadmus employees. The two sides cooperate and Lockwood becomes Agent Liberty . He always wears a full body suit and an expressionless face mask.

James Olsen / Guardian

Mehcad Brooks aka James Olsen

The photographer James Olsen once worked in Metropolis for the newspaper The Daily Planet . During this time, a friendship began between him and Superman. He now works for Cat.Co and knows about Kara's identity as a Supergirl. From the second season he runs her company in Cat Grant's absence and keeps this position after the takeover by Lena Luthor, with whom he has a love affair.

During the second season, the desire to act as a superhero overcomes him and becomes Guardian with Winn's help, who makes the armor . He initially keeps this identity a secret from the public, before being forced to reveal himself towards the end of the third season. Kara is initially not enthusiastic about his work as Guardian, but eventually accepts it. He has a younger sister named Kelly Olsen.

Former supporting characters

Maxwell Lord

Maxwell Lord is a somewhat headstrong scientist who has a certain aversion to Supergirl and challenges her with various experiments during the first season. For this reason he is held captive by the DEO for a short time.

Leslie Willis / Livewire

The radio presenter Leslie Willis was once discovered by Cat Grant, promoted and integrated into Cat.Co along with her own radio program. One day when she complains about Supergirl on her show, she is put in place by her manager, who considers this to be incompatible with her marketing concept. Since Leslie refuses to accept this, she has to work for Cat.Co as a traffic reporter. While she is sitting in a helicopter, it gets caught in a thunderstorm, which is why Supergirl appears to the rescue. She extends her hand to Leslie and inadvertently acts as a ladder during the rescue operation, in which she is struck by lightning, causing Willis' hair to turn silver and she initially falls into a coma. When she awakes from this, she discovers that she is more or less one with electricity and henceforth calls herself Livewire . She also decides to take revenge on Cat Grant and Supergirl. She once allied herself with Silver Banshee for this. In the second season she is kidnapped from prison by a mad scientist who wants to learn her skills. Supergirl saves her and they briefly fight their kidnapper together. When Livewire wants to kill her peinger, Kara asks her not to kill him and in return promises her to let her go and that she won't start chasing her until her kidnapper is in jail. Livewire accepts the offer and disappears with the sentence: " In the future only we girls. Then we will braid each other's hair ", thus showing a little sympathy for Supergirl. Kara lets her go as promised, because she has realized that Livewire is not completely bad and has something good in it. In the third season she has to temporarily support Supergirl in the fight against the world killer Reign before she is killed by the latter in battle when she throws herself in front of Supergirl and thus saves her life.

Siobhan Smythe / Silver Banshee

Siobhan Smythe was hired by Cat Grant as an additional assistant when she felt Kara was overwhelmed. Siobhan and Kara are immediately unsympathetic. When the former slipped a story rejected by Cat Grant to the competing Daily Planet, she was fired, and her attempt to intrigue against Kara also failed. When she falls desperately from the skyscraper, she cushions her shrill scream. The DEO then inspects it. There she overhears the Livewire, who was imprisoned at the same time, expressing her thirst for revenge against Cat Grant. Shortly afterwards, she seeks advice from her aunt, who tells her about the curse of her ancestors from Ireland. She uses her skills to free and ally with Livewire. at the rates of the latter, from now on she takes on a morbid appearance and calls herself Silver Banshee .

Dr. Lilian Luthor

Brenda Strong aka Lilian Luthor

Lilian Luthor is a doctor and the head of Cadmus , an organization that fights aliens. She is the adoptive mother of Lena, who comes from an affair with her husband. For this reason, her son Lex was the first, but she still has maternal feelings for Lena. The latter has an ambivalent relationship with her and refuses to support her in her fight against aliens.

Rhea of Daxam

Rhea is the Queen of the Daxam and the mother of Mon-El. After the incident on the slave moon, she becomes aware of her son's stay on earth. Together with her husband, she wants to bring him back, but Mon-El refuses. Since her husband presses her to accept it, she kills him. A short time later, she manipulates Lena Luthor using flattery and rhetorical tricks so that she can build a transportal to foreign worlds. The Daxamites use the latter to travel from all over space and occupy the earth. Due to a short-term collaboration between Supergirl and Lilian Luthor, the earth's atmosphere is equipped with lead, which means that Rhea and the other Daxamites - with the exception of Mon-El, who can evade the short term due to his longer stay - perish.

Thomas Coville

Thomas Coville was just like Alex a passenger on the plane that saved Kara from the crash and thus revealed itself to the world. He then founded a sect that Supergirl worshiped as a goddess. When he shows himself disaffected by this in the meantime, he turns to the world killers and their creators. The latter kill him when they no longer have any use for him.

marketing

On March 6, 2015, the first picture of Melissa Benoist in a supergirl costume was published. In May 2015, CBS released the first trailer for the new series. In addition, a sneak peek of the pilot episode was shown at San Diego Comic Con .

Shared serial multiverse

In November 2014, Greg Berlanti showed interest in creating Supergirl as part of the series multiverse , which also includes the series Arrow and The Flash . The chairman of the station The CW , which broadcasts both series, Mark Pedowitz, was also open in January 2015 to publish crossover episodes across stations. However, Nina Tassler, chairwoman of CBS , which is co-owner of The CW , said that Supergirl will not have any crossover episodes with these two series for the time being, as the shows are on different television channels. Greg Berlanti, however, confirmed that the series are set in the same universe. It has been announced that the series will have crossovers, but for the time being, the characters that appear in one series will not appear in the other series. In early February 2016, CBS announced that it was planning a crossover with The Flash , which premiered on March 28, 2016. Contrary to what Berlanti originally announced, Supergirl does not play in the same universe as The Flash and Arrow , but in a parallel universe . In the episode Welcome to Earth Two by The Flash , Supergirl can be seen for a brief moment during the journey to Earth Two, and episode 18 Flash Visit shows the first crossover in the series between Flash and Supergirl.
