Jesse Lamont Martin (born Jesse Lamont Watkins ; born January 18, 1969 in Rocky Mount , Virginia , USA ) is an American film, television and theater actor . His best-known role is that of "Detective Ed Green" in the crime series Law & Order .

Life

He was born in Rocky Mount in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the youngest of five sons of truck driver Jesse Reed Watkins and college counselor Virginia Price. His parents separated when he was a child, and he took the surname of a stepfather. While still in elementary school, this new family moved to Buffalo in the US state of New York . Because of his distinct southern accent, Jesse L. Martin tended to be silent and shy at school. However, a teacher persuaded him to take part in a school theater production of the fairy tale " The Golden Goose ". He portrayed a pastor there and played him with his accent as the Baptist priest of the Southern Baptist Convention .

In high school , he then attended the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts , where he was voted the most talented actor in the senior year. After high school he studied at the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University theater arts .

After graduation, he toured with the John Houseman theater company . He played at the Actors Theater of Louisville and the Cleveland Play House . After returning to New York, he appeared on smaller stages as well as in soap operas and commercials . After some time he received roles on Broadway in some award-winning plays, from 1998 also roles in an independent film and in a briefly broadcast series. He was discovered during a Broadway performance by David E. Kelley , who was looking for an actor to play the role of a new lover for the main character of the series Ally McBeal . There he played the role of Dr. Greg Butters . He also portrayed an alien in the 1999 X-Files series .

While he was acting on Ally McBeal , he heard that actor Benjamin Bratt was planning to quit Law & Order . Jesse L. Martin then asked the producer of the series Dick Wolf to be allowed to take on the role of Detective Ed Green, and received the role. He played the role of this police officer from 1999 to 2008.

Since 2014 he has played the role of Detective Joe West in the series The Flash .
