Smash is an American musical - drama - television series by Theresa Rebeck . The series was produced between 2011 and 2012 by DreamWorks Television in collaboration with Universal Television for the US broadcaster NBC . It is about the plan to create a new Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe . It first aired in the US on February 6, 2012 on NBC. The German-language first broadcast was shown on RTL II from January 3, 2013 .

action

The series revolves around the creation of a musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe , which the songwriters Tom and Julia put together. However, the two have completely opposite ideas about the piece. Julia wanted to say goodbye to Broadway and adopt a child with her husband Frank, but then she got the opportunity to realize the musical. This leads to a crisis in Julia and Frank's marriage.

As soon as the songs are finished, a dispute between Karen and Ivy Lynn begins, because the two want to have the main roles. And then there is the persistent producer Eileen, who discovers the project and brings the brilliant director Derek on board, who upsets the others with his self-centered, sly and amoral behavior.

characters

Julia Houston
She is a successful Broadway writer who has won several awards. Together with her good friend Tom, she writes the musical about Marilyn. She is married to Frank, who is not enthusiastic about her work. When her childhood sweetheart Michael Swift reappears, she begins an affair with him. She has a son with Frank, Leo.
Derek Wills
He is the bad boy, director and choreographer of the musical who will stop at nothing to make the show a success. He has an on and off relationship with Ivy Lynn, though he also shows interest in Karen Cartwright and Rebecca Duvall. He doesn't get along with Tom, which makes working together difficult.
Karen Cartwright
She is an inexperienced Iowa beauty who is a serious contender for the lead role of Marilyn Monroe . However, she has to prevail against Ivy Lynn and in the end gets the lead role. She is hoping for the big breakthrough. She is in a relationship with Dev.
Tom Levitt
He is a composer and Julia's longtime songwriting partner. He and Derek Wills have a hostile relationship because something has happened between the two. Although it is not officially addressed, Tom is gay. He would love to star Ivy Lynn since the two are friends and have known each other for a long time. He would also like to make her fame.
Ivy Lynn
She is an experienced stage actress who only ever made it into the choir. She has been trying for years to get out of the background into the spotlight, but it keeps being thrown back. During the season she is in constant competition with Karen to get the lead, but has to admit defeat again.
Dev Sundaram
He is Karen's friend and the mayor's press officer. His duties for the mayor could destroy Karen's dream.
Frank Houston
He is Julia's husband and was a high school chemistry teacher. He sacrificed his job for his family. That's why he's not thrilled that Julia is writing another musical. When Michael also shows up, he believes that his marriage is over. He has a son with Julia, Leo.
Eileen Rand
She is the persistent and tenacious producer of the musical. She has to make sure that the budget doesn't skyrocket because her ex-husband has her money frozen. She has a passion for art, which is why she also produces Julias and Tom musicals.
Ellis Boyd
He is Tom's assistant and later Eileen's assistant. He has an unscrupulous determination as he tries to get credit for the musical to stand as a producer himself.

production

At the end of January 2011, NBC's managing director , Robert Greenblatt, appointed a serial pilot based on an idea by Steven Spielberg . Actually the pilot was developed for the pay-TV channel Showtime . It was also announced that the Grammy - and Tony -prämierten songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will produce the music for the series. On May 12, 2012, the broadcaster ordered the series for spring 2012. In June 2011, Columbia Records secured the rights to the songs and signed the lead actress Katharine McPhee .

In March 2012, NBC announced the production of a second season of 17 episodes. Since the ratings fell even further during the second season and the series could not convince on Saturday either, NBC announced the discontinuation of the series in May 2013.

Casting

At the beginning of February 2011 the main role was given to Debra Messing . A few days later, Megan Hilty received another leading role. On February 15, 2011 it was announced that former American Idol participant Katharine McPhee would play a central role. Furthermore, it was Christian Borle and Jack Davenport cast in lead roles. On March 7, 2011, Deadline.com reported that Oscar winner Anjelica Huston had been signed to a lead role.

For the second season, Leslie Odom Jr. was promoted from supporting to leading actor. In June 2012, Jennifer Hudson was hired for a story arc. In addition, were Daniel Sunjata and Jesse L. Martin cast in supporting roles.

Restructuring after the first season

Due to decreasing audience ratings during the first season, the decision was made to make some changes in the second season. In April, for example, the post of showrunner was given to Josh Safran , who had previously been carried out by Theresa Rebeck . In addition, the main actors Raza Jaffrey , Jaime Cepero and Brian d'Arcy James and the supporting actor Will Chase had to leave the series. At the same time, three new leading roles were sought to enrich the series. So were Jeremy Jordan , Andy Mientus and Krysta Rodriguez cast in the second season.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing of the first season was done in 2012 at the dubbing company Interopa Film in Berlin under the dialogue direction by Oliver Feld , who was also responsible for the dialogue book .

reception

“More serious than the competition, but still lively produced and equipped with singers who are blessed with both singing talent and charm, make the series pilot to Smash a worth seeing whole for series junkies with a preference for rags-to-riches to millionaire stories. There is still some room for improvement, but the start is already very promising. "
