Career

As an actor

Robert Duncan McNeill grew up in Atlanta , the capital of Georgia , and began his acting career in local and regional productions . After attending high school , he moved to New York City to become a professional actor ; Initially, however, he only got small roles, which is why he began to study drama and dance at the renowned New York Juilliard School . A short time later, McNeill got the role of Charlie Brent in the perennial television series All My Children and even received an Emmy nomination for it. He also appeared in the film Masters of the Universe (1987). He played other guest roles, for example, in Alone Against the Future and LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials .

In 1992, McNeill played a Star Fleet cadet named Nicholas "Nick" Locarno in the series Starship Enterprise - The Next Century , episode A Failed Maneuver . As team leader, he carried out a prohibited flight maneuver together with Wesley Crusher and three other cadets, in which one person was killed - Locarno was expelled from the academy for this. This laid the foundation for McNeill's best-known role as Lieutenant Tom Paris , from the regular cast of the television series Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager (1995-2001). Originally, the producers intended the character of Locarno to be the helmsman of Voyager, but the producers considered his background to be too gloomy. For McNeill, the new role of Tom Paris was created, which, however, has many parallels to Locarno.
