Suburgatory is an American comedy - TV show by Emily Kapnek . It consists of three seasons and 57 episodes and was produced from 2011 to 2014 by Warner Bros. Television for the US broadcaster ABC . It is about 15-year-old Tessa Altman, who moves with her father George from the big city to the idyllic suburbs. The series title that means as much as suburban hell , is a portmanteau of the words Subdivision ( English suburb ) and Purgatory ( English purgatory ). It first aired in the United States on September 28, 2011 on ABC in the comedy block between The Middle and Modern Family .

action

Single architect George Altman does his best to raise his teenage daughter Tessa properly. But when he finds a pack of condoms in his daughter's drawer, he decides to move from the center of the big city New York to its idyllic suburb. Once there, after seeing how “perfect” everything is here, Tessa believes that she has landed in the world of the Stepford women . Her father also wonders at the sight of beautiful facades, perfectly trimmed lawns, mothers who have undergone cosmetic surgery and teenagers slurping Red Bull whether he has not made his daughter's situation worse with the move.

With the help of old college friend Noah, flirtatious neighbor Dallas, weird school friend Lisa, and her alpha mother Sheila, the two of them are learning and gradually enjoying suburban life.

Production method and characteristics

The setting is the fictional town of Chatswin, which, as can be seen in the opening credits , is located in Westchester County , an affluent district outside New York City . The telephone code 914 and ZIP code 10805 also point to this location . In fact, the shooting takes place on the west coast in Toluca Lake , a district of Los Angeles . The outdoor shots are mostly shot in the district itself or in the vicinity in and around the city.

A special feature of the series is that the voice of the protagonist Tessa comments on the events in the individual episodes.

Production history

Emily Kapnek , from which the well-known youth series Gingers Welt comes, presented her idea for Suburgatory to ABC in October 2010 , which then gave the green light for a pilot episode in January 2011 . The production company Warner Bros. Television was commissioned with the production together with Piece of Pie Productions. After the shooting of the pilot episode took place in April 2011, the official series order from ABC followed in May 2011. Filming of the remaining episodes of the first season resumed in the summer of 2011 and ended in February 2012. September 28, 2011 was named as the premiere. After just three episodes broadcast, the broadcaster Suburgatory ordered a full series of 22 episodes.

In May 2012, ABC announced the production of a second season with an additional 22 episodes. Exactly one year later, in May 2013, the production of a third season was announced. The appointment followed again a year later, on May 9, 2014.

Casting

The auditions began in February 2011 with the signing of Jane Levy as protagonist Tessa Altman, a Manhattan teenage girl raised by her single father George for the past 15 years. A week later, the role of Noah Werner, George's college buddy, who had moved to the suburb a few years earlier as a dentist, was cast by Alan Tudyk . In early March 2011, Allie Grant was hired for the role of Lisa Shay, a socially awkward girl at school who befriends Tessa. A few days later, the role of Tessa's single father George, who moves with her from Manhattan to the suburbs, starred with Jeremy Sisto and the role of Dalia Royce, a girl in the immediate vicinity who quickly becomes Tessa's enemy at school, with Carly Chaikin occupied. Also a short time later one could engage for the role of the wealthy housewife and mother of Dalia, Dallas Royce, Cheryl Hines . She tells George that her absent husband ( Jay Mohr ) "travels a lot". The final roles were Tessa's unsuspecting high school counseling teacher, Mr. Wolfe, starring Rex Lee, and the Altmans domineering neighbor Sheila Shay starring SNL graduate Ana Gasteyer . Both roles were initially only intended as supporting and guest roles, but were then expanded to lead roles.

From season two, Chris Parnell was promoted to lead actor as Fred Shay. However, the contracts of the two main actors Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee were not extended for the third season due to budget cuts.

reception

criticism

The series has a Metascore of 70/100 at Metacritic based on 25 reviews. On TV.com , the series is rated 8.3 / 10 based on 555 votes, and on IMDb.com it is rated 7.2 / 10 based on more than 27,000 votes. Critics diverge widely, says David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle , that "Kapnek managed to make a series both satirical and emotionally engaging," and goes on to say that "these two types of comedy don't always work well together." . On the other hand, Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times criticized the series for “starting with a thin premise and using it to jump to an imprecise dichotomy , supported by tired and uncomfortable stereotypes”.
