history

RTÉ Two (I)

There was a big debate in the 1970s about whether the second Irish TV program planned at the time should be produced by the BBC or the RTÉ, the latter being chosen. The station started on November 2, 1978 as RTÉ Two. It was celebrated with a grand opening gala in Cork . At the beginning it was only broadcast in the evening and many BBC and ITV programs were taken over. However, the station was not particularly successful with it.

Network 2

The program was renamed Network 2 in 1988 and it got a more contemporary logo. The start of broadcasting was brought forward to 2:30 p.m. Even then, children's programs were broadcast in the afternoon. On Saturday afternoons, sports and programs in Gaelic were primarily broadcast. Late news also came. The restart was a success and the station was renamed RTÉ Network Two in the mid-1990s. After all, broadcasting began in the morning, with school television broadcasting predominantly at that time . In addition, there have been attempts to place a late night show on Irish television.

N2

Another change to the transmission scheme took place in 1997 with a new logo and under the name N2. All formats, including the messages, were given the suffix N2, e.g. B. N2 News. The sports broadcasts on Saturday were canceled, and on Friday and Saturday there was more focus on films and series. Monday night turned into a comedy night. Since then, there have been no regular sports programs on RTÉ.

RTÉ Two (II)

In 2003 , N2 was renamed RTÉ Two again in order to draw attention to the affiliation with RTÉ and to ensure a uniform appearance together with RTÉ One . Since then, the proportion of Irish in-house productions in the program has also increased.
