RTÉ One is the oldest television program in the Republic of Ireland , directed by Radio Telefís Éireann . The station is on the VHF - and UHF cable in the Republic of Ireland and receivable by Sky Digital via Satellite in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland . The NTL cable television company also broadcasts the station by cable in Northern Ireland.
The station broadcasts a 24-hour program every day.
history
The station was launched in 1961 under the name Telefís Éireann. It was renamed RTÉ Television in 1966 to draw attention to its affiliation with Radio Telefís Éireann .
In 1978 it was renamed RTÉ One, as RTÉ Two started that year . From 1969, the first broadcasts were broadcast in color; but it took a long time until all programs could be seen in color.
Since 1998 he has competed with TV3 , the first Irish commercial broadcaster. TV3 was founded by the UK ITV group and the Canadian CanWest Global group.
