The cartridge .45 GAP ( G lock A utomatic P istol) is one of GLOCK in collaboration with CCI and Speer developed and introduced in 2003, pistol cartridge .
development
The cartridge was developed to be able to fire a .45 caliber from a handle with smaller dimensions (small frame). Until now , the .45 ACP cartridge could only be fired from GLOCK rifles with an enlarged handle (large frame); With the new cartridge, it is possible to fire it from weapons with the handle of the 9 mm Parabellum or .40 S&W . On the one hand, this saves costs in production, and on the other hand, it increases the ergonomics for people with small hands, since the standard handle for the .45 ACP is relatively large.
However, it is not possible to use an interchangeable system for smaller calibers with .45-GAP weapons despite the same size of the grip and the same dimensions of the slide. The reasons for this incompatibility are the different sizes of the locking block and the differently shaped ejector.
Another reason for the development was that in some countries like Italy the possession of weapons in military calibers is not allowed for civilians and there, instead of 9 mm Parabellum and .45 ACP, comparable alternatives are in demand.
The .45 GAP is not an abbreviated .45 ACP, but a completely new design. The cartridge base diameter was reduced, the case base reinforced, the extractor groove made smaller and a smaller primer (small pistol) used. The advantage is that the same bullets can be used as with the .45 ACP.
