The sea

The approximately 2.4 hectare eponymous Toluca Lake is located on the southeastern edge. The water originally had natural springs, but today it is pumps that keep the water level at its level. The bottom of the lake is sealed with a layer of asphalt about ten centimeters thick ( four inches of asphalt concrete ) to prevent the water from seeping away . The lake is owned by the owners of the properties adjacent to the lake (residential homes and a golf club) and is managed by the Toluca Lake Property Owners Association, a not-for-profit founded in 1934.

history

In 1893 a petition was filed with the US Postal Service to designate the area's first post office as the "Toluca Post Office". General Charles Forman, a wealthy local landowner and a proponent of the petition, later stated that he chose the name "Toluca" from a Paiute word meaning "fertile" or "beautiful" valley. Although it was part of a larger area traditionally named "Lankershim" after a colonel of the same name - including the Southern Pacific Railroad station and the post office opposite, opened in 1893 - Forman called his own ranch and the surrounding land "Toluca" ".

The development of the village is closely related to General Forman's biography. He started out as a simple worker and later became a rancher and eventually a timber contractor. In the late 1880s, he founded the Kern River Company, a power plant company that produced electricity on the Kern River and supplied it to Los Angeles . His holdings at the time included much of what is now Toluca Lake and the western part of the old and historic Marshland Lake now called Toluca Lake.

The Forman Toluca Lake Ranch had grown into a thriving producer of peaches , apples, and walnuts . In 1923, investors bought and developed the land as "Toluca Lake Park". The first attempt failed, but a new group of investors took over the company and named it "The Toluca Lake Company". The company soon changed the name to the simpler "Toluca Lake" and designed a city coat of arms on which a swan rests on undulating water.

The name Lankershim was considered for the city. Colonel JB Lankershim established the urban area of Toluca on the eastern edge of his vast family estate in 1888. During the late 1890s, the city name Lankershim had replaced the name Toluca. Around 1927, the Hollywood Lure inspired local merchants to start a campaign to change the North Hollywood parish name. The original urban area of Toluca is now part of Toluca Lake.

The Spanish colonial building that still exists today features a tree in the front yard under which she signed the plan for her flight around the world. It settled in Toluca Lake because the best aircraft in the world were designed and built nearby at the Lockheed factory in Burbank . Entertainer Bob Hope moved to Toluca Lake in the late 1930s and lived there until his death in 2003 at the age of 100. In 1945 Frank Sinatra and his family moved to a home in Toluca Lake and spent their weekends at their Lone Palm Hotel in Palm Springs . The house was a little further down the street Earhart had lived on. Ronald Reagan , a former actor and future 40th President of the United States , married his second wife, Nancy Reagan , on March 4, 1952, at the home of fellow actor William Holden , who was also his best man .

In 2006, Toluca Lake homeowner groups mobilized against a proposed North Hollywood expansion by NBC Universal and the Thomas Properties Group. Their Metro Studio project covers more than 93,000 m² of land and would result in numerous employees having to leave the NBC site in Burbank . The project also includes a high-resolution and digital display board, like the one found in Times Square . It would be partially built on land that NBC Universal has leased to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
