Scott Wittman (born November 16, 1954 in Nanuet, New York ) is an American theater director, text writer and screenwriter who mainly works on Broadway .

Life

Wittman grew up in Nanuet, New York and attended high school there until 1972. He then studied for two years at Emerson College in Boston. However, he dropped out of college to pursue a career in musical theater in New York City. He met Marc Shaiman while directing a music show in Greenwich Village . From then on, the two worked closely together and became business partners. While Shaiman wrote for Saturday Night Live , among others, Wittmann organized concerts for Bette Midler , Christine Ebersole , Raquel Welch , Dame Edna Everage and Lypsinka, among others .

In 2002 they wrote the music and lyrics for the musical Hairspray , which won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics , the Tony Award for Best Original Music, and a Grammy . Wittmann supervised and directed the one-man show Martin Short : Fame Becomes Me and the solo concert Matters of the Heart by Patti LuPone (2000).

The two worked with Terrence McNally on a musical adaptation of the film Catch Me If You Can (2002), which had its tryout in Seattle in 2009 and premiered in April 2011 at the Neil Simon Theater . Then the three worked on the musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .

In 2013, Wittman and Shaiman wrote the soundtrack for Bombshell , a musical based on Smash .

In 2018, Wittman wrote the lyrics for nine songs by Mary Poppins Returns . Together with Shaiman, he was nominated for The Place Where Lost Things Go at the 2019 Academy Awards for Best Song .
